Location: St. Louis, MO (Hybrid)

The James Allen Companies Inc. is partnering with a leading provider of specialized insurance solutions to recruit a Senior Claims Specialist for the St. Louis, Missouri branch office. This organization has a strong national presence with multiple branch offices across the U.S. and provides tailored insurance programs for specialized industries including construction, forest products, and oil and gas.

This role is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement and includes required business travel to office locations and customer offices, including occasional overnight travel.

Position Summary

The Senior Claims Specialist provides key support in the handling of claims across multiple lines of coverage, with a primary focus on Liability (Commercial Auto and General Liability) and large property damage / Inland Marine losses
. This role is responsible for evaluating coverage, liability, legal and damage issues, investigating and resolving assigned claims, and delivering a high level of customer service to internal and external business partners in accordance with company standards and regulatory guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Review, analyze, and interpret policy conditions, exclusions, and endorsements to resolve coverage and liability issues on assigned claims.
  • Prepare reservation of rights letters, non-waiver agreements, and coverage disclaimers as needed.
  • Review and evaluate claim reserves to ensure reserves properly reflect potential exposure.
  • Investigate claims to evaluate coverage and legal issues, including meeting with insureds and witnesses, obtaining statements, and securing records and other evidentiary materials.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and reporting of investigative and claim handling activities.
  • Negotiate and resolve claims with claimants, insureds, and counsel, including participation in mediation, arbitration, or other court-supervised settlement processes as needed.
  • Maintain working knowledge of regulatory and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Provide direction to and manage defense counsel, independent adjusters, and other third parties supporting claim resolution.
  • Identify and pursue risk transfer opportunities when applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of claims experience
    , including:

    • Coverage review: interpreting policies, agreements/contracts, reservation of rights, and disclaimers

    • Claims investigation: statements, authorizations, retention of qualified experts and counsel

    • Claims administration: reporting, reserving, compliance with laws and procedures

    • Claims settlement: preparation of disclaimer letters, releases, proof of loss statements; participation in legal proceedings when needed

  • Strong knowledge of coverage, negligence principles, investigative practices, and negotiation techniques.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain state adjusting licenses, as required.
  • Service-oriented approach with the ability to provide prompt, efficient, and effective claims customer service.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers, claimants, opposing counsel, defense counsel, and the public.
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent judgment, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to travel between off-site locations and overnight as needed.
  • Experience handling liability claims in Midwestern states, including MO, IL, NE, and KS, is strongly preferred.
