Quality Machinist

Essex Industries is a multi-site aerospace and defense manufacturer serving military and commercial customers worldwide. The Quality Machinist is responsible for operating precision CNC and/or manual machines while performing in-process and final inspections to ensure parts meet print and quality standards. This dual-role position bridges machining and quality control to maintain consistent, high-accuracy production and reduce scrap or rework.
Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC and/or manual machines according to setup sheets and part drawings.
• Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, CMM, etc.).
• Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and engineering specifications to verify part conformance.
• Record inspection results and maintain documentation for traceability.
• Help reduce rework and scrap caused in the machine shop by catching machining defects and quality issues at the setup operation.
• Work closely with programmers and engineers to resolve dimensional or tolerance problems.
• Maintain equipment, gauges, and tools in proper working condition.
• Support continuous improvement, 5S, and lean manufacturing initiatives.
• Train or mentor other machinists in quality and inspection best practices.
• Ensure adherence to AS9100 and internal quality procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training preferred.
• 3-5 years of experience in precision machining and inspection.
• Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading.
• Proficient in use of inspection tools and equipment.
• Experience with CMM or digital inspection systems a plus.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet production deadlines.
• Commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Frequent use of hands, precision tools, and measuring equipment.
• Work performed in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels.
