Model Shop Technician

Essex Industries is a multi-site aerospace and defense manufacturer serving military and commercial customers worldwide. We currently have an opening for a model shop technician to join our team in a contract position. The model shop technician will perform layout, cutting, milling, drilling, turning, bonding, finishing, and fabrication operations to create precision models, prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and assembled products from engineering drawings, CAD data, and verbal instructions.

Essential duties include fabricating precision models, prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and assembly products from engineering drawings, CAD data, and verbal instructions. The technician will cut, form, bend, modify, and assemble components using manual and CNC equipment as required. Work with a variety of materials including metals, Teflon, composites. Perform layout, cutting, milling, drilling, turning, bonding, and finishing operations. Collaborate with engineers to refine designs and suggest manufacturable solutions.

Maintain tight tolerances and high quality standards consistent with aerospace requirements. Modify or repair existing models, tooling, and fixtures as needed. Maintain model shop equipment, tools, and a clean, safe work environment. Follow all company safety, quality, and documentation procedures.

Qualifications include 3+ years of experience in a model shop, prototype shop, tool room, or similar fabrication environment. Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD models. Proficiency with manual machining equipment (mills, lathes, saws, grinders, etc.). Experience working with tight tolerances and precision assemblies. Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Familiarity with CNC machining and basic programming. Basic CAD/CAM experience (Solid Works or similar). Trade experience preferred. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Manual dexterity for fine fabrication and assembly work.
