The Saint Louis University Good Neighborhood Initiative will develop a partnership and advising model for three student‑led programs—Campus Kitchen, Billiken Bounty, and Billiken 2 Billiken. This project supports individuals who are food insecure: specifically those who live independently in homes across the street from SLU’s campus, as well as those who live in nearby emergency shelters and transitional housing. Campus Kitchen addresses food justice issues by reducing food waste and providing meals to those who are hungry.
The mission of Billiken Bounty is to provide a sustainable on‑campus resource to help alleviate food insecurity for SLU students. Billiken 2 Billiken is an on‑campus resale store that sells gently used items to students at affordable prices. This program reduces waste by collecting items no longer needed by students at move‑out and offering them to new or returning students the following year.
Proceeds from sales are then donated to other student initiatives that reduce economic hardship.
The Good Neighborhood Initiative VISTA will advise Campus Kitchen, Billiken Bounty, and Billiken 2 Billiken, as well as coordinate food and supplies distribution for the organizations. The VISTA will enhance the process for resource sharing between Campus Kitchen and Billiken Bounty, work to increase food supply by understanding the procurement process, expand the number of volunteer shifts, and increase nonperishable food donations.
