Agency Summary

Food Outreach is the only St. Louis area organization and non‑profit whose mission is to provide nutritional support to enhance the quality of life of men, women, and children living with HIV or cancer. Food Outreach provides a combination of nutritionally supportive services through Medically Tailored Meals and groceries, Medical Nutrition Therapy, and nutrition education.

Team Compensation

Position Overview

The Director of Development is a leadership position responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing all fundraising activities for Food Outreach. This role leads a comprehensive development strategy encompassing major gifts, corporate and foundation grants, donor stewardship, special events, and communications to ensure sustainable revenue growth and increased community engagement. Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, the Director of Development cultivates strong relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders while supervising development staff and advancing the organization’s strategic fundraising priorities.

This is a full‑time, exempt position, governed by our standard personnel policies for all staff and eligible for hybrid work.

Essential Functions Development (75%)
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to achieve annual and long‑term revenue goals.
  • Oversee all grant activities, including prospect research, proposal development, submission, reporting, and compliance.
  • Research and solicit individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
  • Manage the agency’s donor database management to ensure accurate tracking of gifts and engagement.
  • Manage donor acknowledgement and stewardship processes to strengthen long‑term relationships.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to donors and funding partners.
  • Support and engage the Board in fundraising efforts and relationship‑building.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board to advance organizational strategic priorities.
  • Develop and strengthen external partnerships that support program sustainability, visibility, and growth, with healthcare providers, corporate partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Identify funding pathways aligned with Medically Tailored Meals and Food is Medicine initiatives.
Special Events (15%)
  • Provide oversight for planning, marketing, and execution of fundraising and community events.
  • Supervise event logistics including sponsorship outreach, budgeting, venue coordination, and promotional collateral.
  • Review and approve event communications and materials.
  • Evaluate event performance to maximize revenue, attendance, and donor engagement.
Communications and Marketing (10%)
  • Lead communications strategy to strengthen awareness of Food Outreach’s mission, programs, and impact.
  • Oversee press relations, media outreach, and brand management.
  • Manage marketing and public relations budgets.
  • Oversee production of donor appeals, newsletters, publications, website content, and promotional materials.
  • Partner with the Development Manager, Grants & Communications to execute social media and digital marketing strategies.
  • Represent Food Outreach at community events and external functions.
Qualifications & Skills

The following qualifications are required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, communications, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in fundraising, strategic planning, and/or donor relations.
  • Strong experience in grant writing/reporting and special events fundraising.
  • Demonstrated success in major gifts strategy, donor engagement, and long‑term relationship management.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of donor stewardship best practices and budget management.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and execute strategic initiatives concurrently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word Press, analytics tools, and CRM software, specifically Raiser's Edge.
