SummaryDevelops and implements a Corporate‑approved orientation program for all employees with emphasis on regulatory issues surrounding long‑term care (LTC) and Bethesda values and mission. Conducts General Orientation using Corporate guidelines incorporating relevant OSHA and Federal and State regulations into the program. Incorporates staff and resident safety (i.e., emergency preparedness, fire safety, security, injury prevention), and the teaching program for those staff dealing directly and indirectly with the Alzheimer resident.
Coordinates and monitors orientation activities throughout orientation. Provides input into evaluation of the orientee and recommends release from or extension of orientation based on learning needs. Assists with mentor programs. Promotes a culture of staff development by being open and encouraging about the work environment. Develops lesson plans and conducts in‑service programs including mandatory in‑services. Identifies other programs by needs assessment of the staff, results of state surveys, introduction of new products, services and technology.
In‑services new and revised policies and procedures. All onsite programs are given in sufficient number and at sufficient times to meet the needs of the staff. Teaches staff basic computer skills as related to their job duties. Instructs staff how to access and use the online education programs as part of the overall in‑service education program. Works closely with the Director of Nursing (DON) particularly in promotion of teamwork and quality care issues.
Provides input into the appraisal process during orientation. Acts as a resource for managers relative to department orientation, in‑service and staff development needs. Conducts the state‑approved Nurse Assistant Training Program or CMT program as directed by state regulations, monitoring classes and maintaining an acceptable fail/pass ratio. A resource person for nurse assistants, monitoring progress. Develops and implements an ongoing infection prevention and control program to prevent, recognize, and control infections, establishing facility‑wide systems for infection prevention, identification, reporting, investigation, and control.
Creates written policies and procedures in accordance with current standards and guidelines. Oversees the facility’s antibiotic stewardship program and resident care activities that increase infection risk. Leads the Infection and Prevention Control Committee, developing action plans and participating in the QAA Committee. Implements annual infection control risk assessments and participates in the facility’s annual assessment review. Reviews, revises, and updates the infection prevention program annually and when needed.
Provides education to staff, residents, and families as appropriate. Ensures public health is notified of reportable diseases. Collaborates on occupational health and safety requirements. Maintains documentation of infection prevention activities. Informs the DON of individual staff development needs related to budgeting. Assists the DON with resident care equipment needs during budget preparation. Promotes compliance program throughout the facility. Participates in continuous quality improvement (QAPI) activities, reviewing all resident care processes to identify improvement areas, preparing concise reports and developing educational programs based on QAPI findings.
Attends local professional educator meetings and Bethesda monthly meetings, sets individual goals and reviews them with the DON, serves as a role model to staff, actively pursues job‑related education, stays current in nursing issues (geriatrics, management, legislation), and may be assigned additional duties as appropriate.
