Position: Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Orthopedic Surgery (PM&R/Spine)
Location: St. Louis

Position Summary

The Orthopedic Spine Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) at WashU Orthopedics is an integral clinical leader and valued member of the PM&R/Spine team managing non‑operative spine patients. This role is primarily outpatient with locations at Sunset Hills, Missouri Baptist, and South County, St. Louis. The NP or PA will facilitate multidisciplinary care, inspire staff, and maintain exceptional patient care while collaborating with physicians, families and the broader care team.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including history, assessment, orders, diagnosis, preventive health assessments, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other providers to develop patient‑centered plans of care.
  • Bill for services covered by collaborative practice agreement when applicable.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients and families about disease management and quality‑of‑life measures.
  • Ensure accuracy of medical records and maintain required reports and statistics.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Manage health conditions via prescriptive authority or referrals, perform diagnostic or therapeutic interventions as permitted by certification and state regulations.
  • Champion the safety and quality of ITB therapy, serve as expert on ITB pumps, develop educational programs, and lead quality initiatives.
  • Serve as clinical expert in rehabilitation nursing, demonstrating authority and skill in complex scenarios.
  • Manage clinical research projects, monitor subjects, administer medications, and provide education.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, quality assurance, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Participate actively in quality improvement and process improvement activities.
  • Engage in professional development through education, literature, and workshops.
  • Contribute to advancement of rehabilitation nursing via research, publications, and presentations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

Conditions:

Normal office environment; patient care setting; exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, chemicals, and other elements; protective devices required; dust, grease, and other elements; direct patient care setting.

Physical Demands:
Typically sitting at desk or table, standing or walking, bending, crouching, stooping, using tools requiring high dexterity; occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Master’s degree.

Certifications / Professional Licenses:
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or American Red Cross); other certifications may be required.

Additional Requirements – Nurse Practitioner
  • Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Advanced Practical Nurse licensure, or ability to obtain licensure within three months of hire.
  • Relevant specialty certifications may be required.
  • Basic Life Support certification (online BLS without skills assessment not acceptable).
Additional Requirements – Physician Assistant
  • Graduate of PA program.
  • Current PA licensure to practice in Missouri and/or Illinois, or ability to obtain within three months of hire.
  • Relevant specialty certifications may be required.
  • Basic Life Support certification (online BLS without skills assessment not acceptable).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education:

    Master’s degree – Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Certifications / Professional Licenses: APN of Illinois or Missouri;
    Certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant of Illinois or Missouri.
  • Work Experience:

Salary

Grade: S31. Salary Range: $93,300.00 – $ annually.
