Vascular Access Service Nurse

Hours for this position are 11:00 to 11:30 PM with every third weekend rotation. The Vascular Access Service provides care to both inpatient and outpatient populations at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The team utilizes both traditional IV insertion techniques and advanced ultrasound-guided technology to place peripheral IVs (PIVs), midlines, and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC lines). Training is provided during orientation to develop competency in the use of ultrasound for vascular access device placement.

In addition to device insertion, nurses assess, maintain, and troubleshoot vascular access devices including restoring catheter patency through evidence-based interventions such as declotting occluded lines and addressing mechanical or positional issues. This role offers opportunities for advancement through higher RN Career Ladder levels with corresponding percentage-based salary increases aligned with expanded responsibilities and role progression. Sign-on bonus eligibility is available based on role requirements (up to $7,500.00).

Department consists of specialty trained RNs over 50 certified in the specialty who place IV catheters into the central vascular of the body, the heart via ultrasound technology in a minimally invasive procedure. Nurses are also skilled at difficult peripheral IV placement, implanted venous port access care and maintenance, and intraosseous needle placement. Staff are also involved in teaching nurses, MDs, and others.

There is participation and ownership in the Vascular Access Policy and Procedures for the hospital. They also participate in choosing products needed for our use. Department is open 24/7 365 days a year.

Role

Purpose:

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities:
Promotes patient and family-centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury including post-treatment home care needs and medication administration. Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development. Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.

Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care. Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
