Registered Nurse - Clinical Float - Medical​/Surgical

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical Surgical Float Pool is responsible for assessing, managing, and delivering nursing care across a variety of Medical Surgical units. The RN coordinates care planning with multiple disciplines, ensuring a patient‑centered approach, and supports the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessment and reassessment, including admission, transfer, and post‑operative evaluations.
• Document findings accurately and completely in the electronic medical record.
• Develop and evaluate individualized patient care plans based on assessment data, diagnoses, and evidence‑based practice.
• Deliver nursing interventions and coordinate with the healthcare team, including medication administration, IV fluid management, and documentation of therapies.
• Use communication tools (SBAR, bedside shift report, hand‑off reports) for clear transfer of information.
• Implement restraints only after evaluating alternatives and monitoring patient response; document all restraint use.
• Manage pain by assessing pain levels, incorporating patient beliefs into a pain plan, and applying non‑pharmacologic techniques.
• Identify and report possible abuse or neglect to appropriate personnel.
• Clarify and enact physician orders, including "read back" procedures for telephone orders.
• Respond promptly to changes in patient condition and activate appropriate escalation processes.
• Participate in infection control practices, including hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and compliance with adverse event reporting.
• Engage in continual professional development and adhere to hospital policies and procedures.

• Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Missouri.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Ability to provide patient education, discharge planning, and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members.
• Strong documentation skills and proficiency with electronic health records.
• Knowledge of evidence‑based nursing practice and quality improvement initiatives.
• Effective communication skills with patients, families, and team members.
• Demonstrated ability to work flexible, irregular hours and respond to emergencies.

• Physical requirements: occasional prolonged standing/walking, lifting, pushing, and transfers.
• Work environment: exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, unpredictable clinical situations, and shift work.
