Job Summary

Pre‑licensure graduate of an accredited nursing program who actively participates in the SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital New Graduate Nurse Residency Program. Under the direction of the RN Preceptor, the nurse provides care to patients within the scope of the role and professional standards, delivering age‑appropriate care for patients with a wide variety of medical conditions.

Eligibility & Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Eligible to practice as determined by the State Board of Nursing
  • Less than one year of experience working as an RN
Essential Functions
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessment and reassessment
    • Age‑appropriate admission or transfer assessment
    • Obtain input from family/guardian when appropriate
    • Accurately and completely document findings
    • Assess post‑op or post‑invasive procedure patients
    • Document education and discharge needs on admission and throughout hospitalization
    • Reassess patients documenting observations, status changes, responses to care, procedures, and interventions
  • Establish, coordinate, and evaluate a plan of care based on assessment data, diagnoses, lab results, orders, protocols, and standards of care
    • Identify short‑ and long‑term goals based on patient needs
    • Formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes
    • Incorporate disease‑specific evidence‑based practice into the care plan and documentation
  • Provide and document nursing interventions as indicated
    • Collaborate with health team members for daily care coordination
    • Provide, coordinate, and communicate patient care, including accurate handoff reports
    • Administer and document medications accurately according to policies
    • Monitor and document IV fluids and parenteral nutrition per procedures
    • Complete referrals as indicated by assessment data
    • Request consultations for special needs, equipment, or information
    • Provide patient/family education and discharge planning per guidelines and protocol
    • Clarify and acknowledge physician orders in a timely manner; document readback for all verbal orders
    • Act on changes in patient condition, involve family when appropriate, and apply infection‑control practices
  • Document and communicate changes in patient condition
    • Perform ongoing evaluation of care effectiveness based on data and interventions
    • Evaluate effectiveness of patient and family education
    • Modify the plan of care as indicated
    • Immediately report significant changes in clinical parameters to the physician and others as required
    • Identify problems, gather pertinent data, suggest solutions, and work toward resolution
    • Report variations from care or treatment according to the occurrence reporting policy
  • Specialized Care for high‑risk patients
    • Restraint Care:
      Initiate and evaluate alternatives to restraints; apply restraints consistently; monitor and document response; provide specified care; consult peers; document thoroughly.
    • Pain Management:
      Assess pain, incorporate cultural/spiritual beliefs, implement prevention strategies, involve patient and family in care plan, and consider non‑pharmacologic methods.
    • Abuse Assessment:
      Recognize abuse criteria, report signs of abuse or neglect to appropriate authorities, and take action to support patient safety.
  • Demonstrate accountability for professional practice
    • Adhere to all quality, performance standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
    • Participate in learning experiences to enhance competence.
    • Maintain currency in hospital/unit policies and procedures.
    • Adapt positively to changing work demands.
    • Contribute to shared governance and unit‑based practice activities.
    • Offer assistance and support to peers and work collaboratively.
  • Collaborate and maintain professional relationships
    • Orient or precept new staff or students as required.
    • Assume, delegate, or redirect care and activities appropriately.
    • Communicate the plan of care precisely and professionally.
    • Supervise and teach students or new staff nurses.
  • Maintain safety and infection‑control standards
    • Practice standard precautions and dispose of hazardous waste per guidelines.
    • Keep a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment; maintain hand hygiene; use safe patient‑handling equipment; adhere to dress code.
