Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient’s hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient/customer driven approach.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements POSITION

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Essential Functions
  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessment/reassessment.
  • Establishes, coordinates and evaluates a plan of care based on analysis of assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab data, tests, procedures, physician orders, protocols and standards of care and other information as relevant.
  • Provides and documents nursing interventions based on assessed patient needs, plan of care, and changes in patient status.
  • Documents and/or communicates nursing care and changes in patient condition.
  • Specialized Care:
    Provides specialized care to patients at high risk for injury (including restraint care, pain management, abuse assessment).
  • Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice.
  • Participates in learning experiences that increases professional competence.
  • Participates in staff meetings, committees, shared governance, and team activities.
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt to changes in work demands.
  • Practices safety and infection control in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Specialized Care Details
    • Restraint Care
      • Initiates/evaluates alternatives to restraint prior to application
      • Applies restraints consistent with the approved procedure.
      • Monitors response throughout the restraint period.
      • Provides specified patient care (toileting, skin care, hydration, feeding, etc.) on a timely basis.
      • Provides consultation for peers to determine alternatives to restraints and 1:1 observation.
      • Documents restraint use and associated care thoroughly.
    • Pain Management
      • Assesses patient for presence of pain on admission and during assessments.
      • Incorporates patient’s cultural/spiritual beliefs regarding pain into pain management plan.
      • Implants pain management techniques focused on prevention.
      • Includes patient and/or family members in developing a pain management plan.
      • Considers other methods of pain control such as massage, repositioning, immobilization, and music therapy.
    • Abuse Assessment
      • Is aware of abuse recognition criteria and incorporates it into assessments.
      • Reports signs of possible abuse/neglect to the appropriate authorities.
      • Takes appropriate action to support patient safety when signs of abuse are noted.
    Professional Practice Expectations
    • Adheres to quality and performance standards, policies, procedures, and protocols when implementing clinical care.
    • Participates in continuous learning and maintains currency in all hospital/unit information and policies.
    • Attends staff meetings, participates in committees, shared governance, and unit-based practice councils.
    • Responds positively to changes and supports peers.
    • Communicates patient care plans precisely and professionally.
    • Supervises and teaches students/new staff nurses as required.
    Safety & Infection Control
    • Practices standard precautions and disposes of hazardous waste per guidelines.
    • Maintains safe, clean, comfortable environment for patients, families, and staff.
    • Follows hand hygiene procedures and uses safe patient handling techniques.
    • Adheres to dress code and keeps environment clutter-free.
    • Reports risk management concerns using eSRM.
    • Completes all mandatory annual requirements (license, certifications, TB screening, influenza vaccination, ethics training, safety training, information security, abuse & neglect, blood borne pathogens, competency, orientation, etc.).
