Job Summary

The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient's hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines using a patient/customer driven approach.

Location & Schedule
  • MO-SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, 1201 Grand
  • Regular full‑time position
  • Shift: 10:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. with on‑call requirements
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessment and reassessment:
  • Age‑appropriate admission or transfer assessment with family/guardian input when appropriate.
  • Accurate and complete documentation of findings.
  • Assessment of post‑op/post‑invasive procedure patients.
  • Determine education and discharge needs of patient and family.
  • Document ongoing patient reassessment and response to care.
  • Establish and evaluate a plan of care based on assessment data, patient diagnosis, lab results, and physician orders:
  • Identify short‑ and long‑term patient goals.
  • Formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Integrate evidence‑based practice into the care plan.
  • Provide and document nursing interventions, including medication administration, IV fluid management, referrals, consultations, patient/family education, and discharge planning:
  • Collaborate with the health team for daily care coordination.
  • Communicate accurate handoff reports.
  • Administer medications accurately according to policies.
  • Monitor and document IV fluids and parenteral nutrition.
  • Complete referrals and request consultations as needed.
  • Educate patient/family and plan for safe discharge.
  • Document and communicate changes in patient condition:
  • Evaluate effectiveness of care and education.
  • Report significant changes to the physician immediately.
  • Identify problems, gather data, propose solutions, and work toward resolution.
  • Specialized care for patients at high risk for injury:
  • Restraint care: evaluate alternatives, apply restraints safely, monitor response, provide necessary care, and document usage.
  • Pain management: assess pain, integrate cultural beliefs, implement preventive techniques, involve patient/family in the plan, and consider non‑pharmacologic methods.
  • Abuse assessment: recognize abuse criteria, report signs to appropriate authorities, and act to support patient safety.
  • Maintain professional practice and continuous learning:
  • Adhere to policies, participate in learning experiences, and maintain competency.
  • Engage in shared governance, committee participation, and team collaboration.
  • Respond positively to change and support peers.
  • Professional communication and teamwork:
  • Mentor new employees and maintain a collaborative team approach.
  • Delegate responsibilities appropriately and communicate clearly.
  • Adhere to safety and infection control policies:
  • Practice standard precautions and dispose of hazardous waste safely.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment, follow hand hygiene, and use safe patient‑handling equipment.
  • Report risk management concerns and complete all mandatory trainings.
  • Provide excellent patient service:
  • Demonstrate courtesy, meet physical and emotional needs, and respond promptly to patient requests.
  • Communicate effectively, maintain confidentiality, and provide accurate handoff reports.
  • Use resources wisely and recommend efficiencies.
  • Participate in performance improvement and evidence‑based practice:
  • Assist in developing and implementing unit goals.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement, collect data, and lead improvement teams when requested.
  • Participate in nursing research and performance improvement activities.
Qualifications
  • Licensed to work as an RN in the state of Missouri.
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Required annual trainings: BLS, Hazardous Materials, Tuberculosis screening, Influenza vaccination, Ethics, Safety, Abuse & Neglect, Occupational Health, and any unit‑specific competency.
  • Experience with critical‑care or surgical units preferred.
  • Strong documentation skills and proficiency with electronic health records.
  • Ability to work irregular hours and handle emergency and crisis situations.
