Position Summary

The Staff Scientist serves as an operational resource within the Hematopathology section within the Department of Pathology & Immunology. They support the delivery of high-quality, timely, and clinically relevant diagnostic testing. Working closely with hematopathologists, laboratory staff, and clinical providers, this role helps coordinate the day-to-day operations of the section and ensures that complex testing workflows progress efficiently.

This position is highly collaborative. Key responsibilities include templating and coordinating bone marrow cases, reviewing and assessing flow cytometry results, coordinating ancillary and reference laboratory testing, and serving as a subject matter expert for complex technical and workflow-related troubleshooting. The Staff Scientist is expected to recognize potential issues, identify appropriate solutions, and work collaboratively with hematopathologists and laboratory colleagues to resolve challenges that may affect case completion or turnaround time.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory medicine and hematology who has a solid understanding of hematologic disease processes, laboratory testing methodologies, and integration of multiple diagnostic modalities used in hematopathology.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
  • Conducts literature searches related to research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
  • Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
