Lead Response Officer; Overnight - Protective Services - Enterprise Physical Operations

Position Summary

The Enterprise Physical Operations, Infrastructure, Capital Programs & Real Estate (EPO) department at WashU provides integrated operational, infrastructure, planning, and facility services that support the university’s mission of excellence in education, research, patient care, and community engagement.

EPO manages and supports 28 million gross square feet across 235+ buildings and associated infrastructure systems, encompassing academic, research, clinical, residential, administrative, and support facilities across the university’s campuses. Teams provide strategic leadership and operational expertise in facility management, infrastructure services, capital project delivery, real‑estate operations, planning, sustainability, engineering, maintenance, environmental services, public safety support, and enterprise operational services.

EPO creates and maintains safe, innovative, efficient, mission‑driven environments that support students, faculty, staff, patients, researchers, and community partners.

Serves as the primary first responder to all life safety and protection of property, emergency and non‑emergency incidents on campus. Provides emergency medical assistance or general first aid. Enforces university policies and procedures and criminal law. May be assigned to vehicle, bike or foot patrol. Must be prepared to deal with a variety of complex and ever‑changing situations, make quick decisions, and take action.

Records information for the official University record. Performs all duties of a Response Officer II and serves as an informal leader and mentor.

40 hours per week.

• Respond to or react to emergency and non‑emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus; when not on assignment, patrol University properties.
• Take action or document follow‑up on any safety and security issues; provide Emergency Management support during large‑scale incidents.
• Receive and compile information for incident reports; conduct initial and follow‑up investigations as assigned; may be seconded to the investigations section for special assignments.
• Provide necessary follow‑up (transport to medical facility, notify proper authorities, coordinate additional action) for faculty, staff, students and visitors after immediate resolution of an incident; apprehend criminal suspects for on‑view or reported criminal activity.
• Serve as a Field Training Officer or instructor; fulfill informal leadership duties in the absence of supervisors and managers.
• Conduct building checks; inspect access control devices, door locks, and proactively identify potential safety or security hazards; use problem‑solving skills to resolve issues found during building checks.
• Assist Medical Center personnel and visitors with directions and provide escorts when requested; partner with customers in assigned geographical areas and assist them in resolving multi‑department issues.
• Takes possession of found property, attempts to locate the owner, and secures property according to established procedure.
• Enforces parking regulations and provides support to the Transportation Office as needed.
