Incumbents operate a wide variety of construction equipment on construction projects for City streets, parks, forestry, and utilities. Duties may include operating tree removal saws, backhoes, cranes, crawlers, excavators, graders, millers, paving machines, rollers, rubber-tired loaders, skid steer loaders, directional boring machines, and fuel trucks to service construction equipment in the field.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Operates all department construction vehicles and equipment as necessary.
- Excavates land; removes debris; demolishes buildings and structures with equipment.
- Levels and grades construction sites such as city parks, streets, utility installations and other city properties.
- Digs holes and trenches; backfills; compacts dirt.
- Lifts and sets heavy objects in excess of 20,000 pounds.
- Cleans shore intake; cleans out drainage ditches; cleans sand and rock from water filters.
- Digs up asphalt and concrete; cuts, grades, digs and paves to close tolerances.
- Cuts and mills street surfaces.
- Paves and rolls asphalt surfaces.
- Bores holes for laying cables and fiber optics.
- Separates debris from sweeper materials.
- Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to use.
- Maintains department vehicles and equipment.
- Transports equipment to job sites.
- May perform welding and routine repairs to equipment.
- May perform manual labor on projects.

Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others, such as co-workers and the general public, within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from supervisors. - Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring of multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, on equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, skid loaders, graders, cranes, crawler tractors, tractor-trailer, and other department equipment. Ability to operate complex equipment and perform machinery general maintenance. - Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information such as work orders, operating instructions and schedules. - Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. - Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective. - Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. - Environmental Factors:
Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents and traffic hazards. - Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained heavy physical effort typically involving some combination of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, occasionally involving objects such as heavy equipment attachments and materials up to one hundred (100) pounds. Tasks require the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, bend, and climb in order to perform equipment operation and manual labor duties. - Sensory Requirements:
Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of sound, odor, and materials associated with the operation of equipment and depth perception.
- Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment such as tree removal saws, backhoes, cranes, crawlers, excavators, graders, millers, paving machines, rollers, rubber-tired loaders, skid steer loaders, directional boring machines, or other related equipment. Completion of a recognized Construction Equipment Operator apprenticeship program may substitute for 1 year of required experience.

Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or
