Telecommunications Technician – (240000VP)

Position Grade: 12G

Job Type: Full-time (Permanent)

Location: Downtown, St. Louis, MO

Incumbents in this position are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing telecommunications systems and equipment within all City operated properties. Duties include programming and configuring PBX equipment, VoIP systems, voicemail systems, paging and public address systems, intercom T1 circuits, fiber optics and other related equipment.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Responds to requests for service, troubleshoots and repairs telephone systems.
  • Programs phone systems for changes to the system.
  • Runs cable to install new systems and repair and update existing systems.
  • Enters work orders into computer and updates work order status on computer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Data Utilization – ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information.
  • Human Interaction – ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others including co‑workers and customers within established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use – operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize equipment such as computers, PBX systems, key systems, impact tools and city vehicles.
  • Verbal Aptitude – utilize reference and descriptive data such as regulations, blueprints, programming manuals, evaluations, work orders and operating manuals.
  • Mathematical Aptitude – perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Functional Reasoning – carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Situational Reasoning – exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in evaluating information against verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors – may involve exposure to adverse conditions such as heat, wetness, toxic agents and electrical currents.
  • Physical Requirements – lift, carry, push, pull moderately heavy objects (20–100 lbs) frequently.
  • Positional Tasks – stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, bend or climb as required.
  • Sensory Requirements – recognize differences in colors, shapes and sounds related to job‑specific equipment.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Technology or a related field; OR
  • Two years of experience in installation, removal, diagnosis and repair of telecommunications equipment; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.
