Position Summary

The Caleres Digital Fabrication Fellowship at the Sam Fox School is a prestigious opportunity for a driven and innovative individual to engage in advanced research in digital fabrication while contributing to the dynamic community in Weil Hall. The fellowship is designed with a 50/50 focus: 50% dedicated to research and 50% to hands‑on involvement in workshops and shop leadership, providing a well‑rounded experience at the intersection of technology, design, and education.

Job Description Primary

Duties & Responsibilities Research Responsibilities
  • Develop innovative approaches, techniques, and technologies in digital fabrication, expanding the boundaries of current practices.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and external partners to enrich the research environment and foster interdisciplinary connections.
  • Create a body of work culminating in an exhibition and/or publication that highlights personal achievements, research findings, and the capabilities of the Caleres digital fabrication lab.
  • Deliver an artist/job talk during the fellowship period to share insights, research progress, and aspirations with the Sam Fox community.
Shop Leadership and Oversight
  • Lead and organize workshops on digital fabrication, sharing expertise with students, faculty, and staff. This includes leading at least one Fox Fridays Workshop.
  • Support a safe shop environment.
  • Serve as a dedicated resource for project consultation and troubleshooting equipment, complementing the efforts of student shop monitors.
  • Manage CNC Calendar and Monitors for jobs coming in and out of the shop through Box and Web Cashier. Perform CNC Jobs as needed if student assistance is not available.
Interaction with Shop Technician
  • The Fellow reports directly to the Shop Technician.
  • Works directly alongside Shop Technician to help with maintenance, education and troubleshooting of shop equipment.

Duration:

  • This Fellowship is a 12‑month commitment.

Fellow Benefits:

  • Full‑time, exempt staff position paid annual $40,000 (to be paid monthly).
  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities and resources at the Sam Fox School.
  • A $500 3D printing stipend for materials provided by the university, enabling exploration and experimentation in digital fabrication.
  • Eligible for WashU full‑time staff benefits.
