Plumber, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Incumbents install and maintain plumbing systems and fixtures in municipal buildings, grounds and facilities.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Maintains all aspects of irrigation systems; installs, alters and replaces valves, faucets, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewer pipes, vents, bathrooms and/or kitchen fittings.
- Performs work as Journeyman Plumber and in the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and fixtures in Parks, park buildings and recreation centers.
- Cuts, bends, threads, reams, assembles, caulks, wipes and solders pipe fitting and joints.
- Clears clogged sewers, toilets, sinks and water coolers.
- Responsible for current City of St. Louis Journeyman Plumber license and state of Missouri license to test and service backflow prev enters at all times.
- Checks vehicle and equipment before operating.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Human Interaction: requires ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to coworkers and the public on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: requires ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as saws, drills, threading equipment, cutting torch, welder, wrenches and related materials.
- Verbal Aptitude: requires ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as work requests, work logs, purchase orders, blueprints, diagrams and general operating manuals.
- Mathematical Aptitude: requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, decimals; may require ability to perform operations with fractions; calculate surface areas and volumes.
- Functional Reasoning: requires ability to apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form; exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Situational Reasoning: requires ability to apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form; exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Environmental Factors: tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease or pathogenic substances.
- Physical Requirements:
requires ability to lift, push and pull over one hundred (100) pounds; lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, climb, bend and twist to install, maintain and repair plumbing systems. - Sensory Requirements: requires ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of sounds and odors with job‑related objects, materials and tasks; trace system leaks by identifying differences in sounds and by odor.
Must possess and maintain a Journeyman Plumber or Master Plumber License in the City of St. Louis while employed by the City of St. Louis; must be licensed as a Journeyman Plumber or Master Plumber in the City of St. Louis at the time of filing application and be able to present license upon request.
Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis; must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request.

In some locations: as part of the Background Check, applicants must meet the minimum screening requirements for certification to access the REJIS and MULES Criminal Justice Information Systems within 30 days of appointment. Incumbents must maintain said certifications while employed by the City of St. Louis.
Veteran's PreferenceTo be eligible, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, at their discretion, accept alternate documentation.
City Residence Preference PointsCity residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.
