Incumbents in this position perform, lead and directly supervise work crews engaged in performing a variety of urban forestry tree maintenance functions such as planting, trimming, removing, stump grinding and other related duties. These positions may require mandatory availability for 24-hour snow and storm call.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • The individual will supervise work in the planting, trimming, removal and overall care of City trees.
  • They must conduct service ratings on subordinate staff members to evaluate work performance.
  • Individual assists in the identification of hazardous trees and make recommendations on necessary services.
  • Individual assists with training in relation to effective tree trimming practices and the associated equipment used on the job daily. Individual ensures production standards are met and provides feedback to Forestry supervisors.
  • Individual utilizes work order documents for organizing daily work and delegate field assignment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Data Utilization:
    Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
  • Human Interaction:
    Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor the work of crew members, in favor of a desired outcome.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as motor vehicles, chippers, chain saws, pruners, trimmers, mechanic’s tools, loaders, aerial lifts and others. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as accident reports, incident reports, work orders, production reports, maintenance records, technical operating manuals, maps, street guides, work safety regulations, procedures and guidelines.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, and decimals.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as supervision, managing, leading, teaching, directing, planning, coordinating and controlling. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife and toxic/poisonous agents.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Requires the ability to lift up to one hundred pounds; push and pull objects over one-hundred (100) pounds to assist with tree maintenance and removal. Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, bend and twist to teach/instruct crews and perform work procedures.
  • Sensory Requirements:
    Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job‑related objects, materials and tasks to clearly distinguish objects, detect diseased trees and communicate with work crews.
