This is a lead worker position, serving as a lead member of a crew tasked with installing, dismantling, overhauling, maintaining and assembling a variety of heavy mechanical equipment such as traveling intake screens, raw water and treated water pumps and pump motors, sluice gates, valves, boilers, air compressors, cooling towers, etc. Additional responsibilities include pipe welding, pipe threading, measuring and layout of piping systems, as well as operating overhead cranes and rigging large asymmetric machinery.
Must be able to work in confined and deep structures and from suspended platforms.
- Performs complex duties which consist of installing, overhauling, and maintaining large and heavy machinery such as high volume pumps, motors, intake screens, sluice gates, valves, boilers, cooling towers, and air compressors.
- Performs journeyman level welding tasks that include field welding pipe and other structures and perform this work in compliance with industry standards.
- Operates overhead cranes and rigs large asymmetric machinery.
- Uses a variety of tools such as electric and gas welding equipment, grinders, drills, pipe threaders, hand tools, etc.
- Leads a crew in a variety of jobs.
- Has the authority to make purchases with BPO's, SPO's, and Emergency Requisition s.
- Schedules, plans, and lays out work.
- Ensures safety equipment is on the job site and being used properly.
- Resolves minor employee conflict.
- Maintains work records and reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations. - Human Interaction:
Requires the ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor the work of co-workers, in favor of a desired outcome. Requires the ability to act as a lead person. - Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as hand and power tools, drills, saws, grinders, pullers, threading/tapping equipment, wrenches, welders, cutting torches, overhead cranes, rigging equipment, lifting equipment, boats and motor vehicles. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery. - Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, blueprints, equipment manuals, time sheets, tool catalogs, shop manuals and general operating manuals. - Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, fractions and decimals; perform mathematical operations involving basic geometry. - Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as leading, teaching and coordinating. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. - Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. - Environmental Factors:
Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents - Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds. - Sensory Requirements:
Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors and shapes to follow color coded diagrams and clearly distinguish objects, sounds to detect malfunctioning equipment and tools.
Two years of experience in repairing and maintaining a variety of heavy mechanical equipment that includes welding and pipe work;
OR , successful completion of a welding, pipe fitting, or millwright apprenticeship program plus one year of experience.
OR , an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
