* Certifications:
Applicants must possess valid Fire Fighter I and Fire Fighter II certifications at the time of filing application.

Incumbents in this position perform work as a team member at various life-threatening emergency medical scenes and fire scenes, extinguishing fires and operating a variety of fire and medical equipment, apparatus, and tools.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :Responds to fire alarms in designated district; drives fire apparatus to and from fire, accident or emergency scene; operates and uses a variety of tools and equipment such as extinguishers, axes, pike poles and other equipment; lays out and connects hoses to hydrants; raises and climbs ladders; holds nozzle, directs water stream and assists in handling hose; performs ventilation and salvage tasks at fire scene;
rescues persons from fire or accident scene; administers first aid treatment to injured persons; assists in the maintenance and repair of equipment, apparatus, station house and surrounding grounds; inspects buildings in designated district to search for fire hazards and to become familiar with floor plan of building; participates in training sessions to enhance knowledge of hydraulics, first aid techniques, and fire ground tactics;
maintains the fire watch by relaying orders and locations of alarms received; operates specialized equipment when assigned to airport, marine or rescue truck duty; may be assigned as driver of an officer's car; may participate at special events such as parades, theaters, or schools by maintaining fire watch or crowd control; may take photographs at arson or special events scene.
Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of the operation of fire equipment and apparatus; some knowledge of fire ground tactics and chemical firefighting techniques; some knowledge of first aid treatment; some knowledge of City geography. Some skill in making minor repairs to equipment and apparatus; some skill in operating a variety of fire tools and equipment; some skill in climbing ladders and working at considerable heights;
some skill in cooperating as a team member at fire scene.
Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Pursuant to Ordinance No. 67310, applicants must not have reached their 33rd birthday by the last date for filing application. Also pursuant to Ordinance No. 67310, qualified applicants who have served in active duty with the United States Armed Forces may deduct from their age the length of time spent on such active military duty provided the total deduction for military duty does not exceed six years.
Education: A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate is required upon completion of the testing process.

Driver’s License: Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis Fire Department. Military Service: Applicants who have served in the United States Armed Forces must have received an Honorable Discharge or a General Discharge under honorable conditions.
