Job Description

Float RN who provides nursing support across Pre‑Op, OR, and PACU to maintain patient flow, safety, and efficient daily operations.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities
  • Assess, develop, and implement total nursing care for pre‑operative patients.
  • Record and report all symptoms, reactions, abnormalities, and changes in physical and/or mental conditions.
  • Administer medications and treatments ordered by physicians.
  • Care for and discharge pre‑operative patients according to facility policies.
  • Review pre‑operative patient charts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare the operating room, ensuring equipment and supplies are available and functioning.
  • Assist the surgical team by circulating cases, maintaining a sterile environment, performing surgical time‑out, and verifying patient, procedure, and site.
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, and team members during procedures.
  • Document intra‑operative care accurately in the medical record.
  • Monitor patient safety and respond to changes in condition.
  • Handle, label, and dispose specimens correctly.
  • Assist with room turnover to maintain efficient case flow.
  • Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards including AORN and facility policies.
  • Ensure surgical consent is completed accurately and compare with physician order and schedule.
  • Confirm all pre‑operative work‑up (lab, chest X‑ray, EKG, H&P) is in the chart and report abnormal findings.
  • Report pertinent pre‑operative information to the OR nurse.
  • Obtain and label personal belongings bag; assist patient with OR dress attire.
  • Complete registration and pre‑operative worksheets.
  • Administer pre‑operative sedation with proper ordering.
  • Verify patient allergies and ensure medication safety.
  • Document medication details on pre‑operative worksheet.
  • Function independently in emergency situations and display proficiency in emergency nursing skills.
  • Make logical, quick decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Maintain patient and employee privacy and confidentiality.
  • Provide psychological support to patients and/or families.
  • Build rapport with physicians and medical departments to complete pre‑operative work‑up.
  • Maintain competence via continuing education; meet CEU re‑licensure requirements.
  • Attend facility in‑services.
  • Assist in orientation of new employees as directed.
  • Maintain supplies and cleanliness of work environment.
  • Report and label malfunctioning or broken equipment.
  • Work within facility and departmental safety guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of healthcare product inventory procedures and stock rotation.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to healthcare products.
  • Hands‑on self‑starter; ability to multi‑task and detail‑oriented.
  • Strong organization, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to handle large volume of detailed work accurately.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift, and handle supplies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with co‑workers, vendors, and management.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical functions and data entry.
Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current registered nurse license.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certifications.
Licenses & Certifications (Required)
  • Basic Life Support
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Preferred
  • Associate’s degree or better.
Physical and Mental Demands

Requires sitting, standing, bending, and assisting patients in a surgery center environment.
