RN Float Pre‑Op, PACU, and OR – Full‑Time

Job Title:

FLOAT RN

General Summary

Float RN who provides nursing support across Pre‑Op, OR, and PACU as needed to maintain patient flow, safety, and efficient daily operations.

Essential Functions
  • Assesses, develops, and implements total nursing care for the pre‑operative patient.
  • Records and reports to appropriate persons all symptoms, reactions, abnormalities, and changes in the physical and/or mental conditions of the patients.
  • Administers medications and treatments ordered by the physician.
  • Provides care and discharges pre‑operative patients according to facility policies.
  • Reviews the pre‑operative patient’s chart for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepares the operating room for surgical procedures, ensuring all equipment and supplies are available and functioning properly.
  • Assists the surgical team by circulating cases and maintaining a sterile and safe environment.
  • Performs surgical time‑out and verifies patient, procedure, and site according to policy.
  • Communicates effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, and team members during procedures.
  • Documents intraoperative care accurately in the medical record.
  • Monitors patient safety throughout the procedure and responds to changes in patient condition.
  • Ensures proper handling, labeling, and disposition of specimens.
  • Assists with room turnover to maintain efficient case flow.
  • Adheres to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards including AORN and facility policies.
  • Ascertains surgical consent is completed accurately and compares it to the physician’s order and OR schedule.
  • Ascertains all pre‑operative work‑up (lab, chest X‑ray, EKG, H&P) is documented and reports abnormal findings to the anesthesiologist and/or surgeon prior to the scheduled day of surgery.
  • Reports pertinent pre‑operative information to the OR nurse.
  • Obtains and labels personal belongings bag and assists patient in proper OR dress attire.
  • Completes registration form and pre‑operative worksheet.
  • Administers pre‑operative sedation following an order.
  • Questions allergies and confirms intended action and side effects of medications prior to administration.
  • Documents medication administration on the pre‑operative worksheet including dose, time, and method.
  • Functions independently in emergency situations.
  • Displays proficiency in nursing skills during emergency situations.
  • Makes logical and quick decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Maintains patient and employee privacy and confidentiality while providing psychological support to patients and/or families.
  • Maintains rapport with physicians and other medical departments to complete pre‑operative work‑up.
  • Maintains competence through continuing education and meets CEU requirements for re‑licensure.
  • Attends all facility in‑services.
  • Assists in orientation of new employees as directed.
  • Maintains supplies and cleanliness in the work environment.
  • Reports and labels any malfunctioning or broken equipment.
  • Works within established facility and departmental safety guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of healthcare products, stock rotation procedures, storage systems, inventory supplements, preference card management, and credit.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to healthcare products.
  • Knowledge of inventory control procedures.
  • Hands‑on, self‑starter with ability to multi‑task, be detail‑oriented, and possess superior organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of detailed work accurately.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
  • Superior leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, lift, and handle all supplies.
  • Strong ability to interact with co‑workers, vendors, and management consistently and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical functions.
  • Ability to perform data entry procedures and equipment and supply tracking.
Education & Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse License.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certifications.
