Job SummaryThis full‑time permanent position supports the Minnesota Criminal Justice System by providing results and interpretation of breath testing evidence. The role is based in the Calibration Laboratory of the BCA Lab in St. Paul, MN, and includes validation of new technology, breath alcohol training, and maintenance of breath alcohol testing devices.
Responsibilities- Conduct breath testing and deliver laboratory results to the Criminal Justice System.
- Validate new technology for evidential breath testing.
- Provide breath alcohol training to staff and external stakeholders.
- Repair, maintain, and certify breath alcohol testing instrumentation.
- Coordinate instrument exchanges with law enforcement agencies.
- Assist in the coordination of section activities using shared laboratory equipment.
- Serve as a mentor and trainer for new staff members.
- A Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physical Sciences, Toxicology, Pharmacology, Medical Technology, Forensic Science, or equivalent.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- At least a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, Medical Technology, or equivalent from an accredited university.
- At least two years of experience in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic calibration laboratory repairing and certifying evidential breath test instrumentation.
- Experience testifying in a court of law as an expert witness in Evidential Breath Testing.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or equivalent.
- Experience in a forensic laboratory through internship or work experience.
- Experience teaching and instructing large groups.
- Experience working with databases.
- Experience repairing circuitry or electronics.
- Master’s or PhD degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Toxicology, Biology, Pharmacology, Medical Technology, or equivalent from an accredited university.
- Operational knowledge of the ANAB Forensic Laboratory Accreditation Program.
- Experience testifying regarding uncertainty of measurement as it relates to breath alcohol.
- Experience teaching and instructing large groups.
- Experience repairing circuitry or electronics.
Occasionally move and transport items up to 50 pounds; frequently move heavy tools and file boxes; maintain stationary position for extended periods; navigate rough terrain as required.
Additional Requirements- Background investigation, including criminal history, reference check, fingerprinting, psychological evaluation, driver’s license check, education verification, drug and cannabis screen, and SEMA4 records.
