Statewide Accounting Director

Minnesota Management and Budget seeks a collaborative and strategic Statewide Accounting Director to lead the Statewide Accounting Section within the Accounting Services Division. In this critical statewide leadership role, you will guide a team of skilled accounting and finance professionals and direct the publication of the State of Minnesota's major annual financial reports, including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), Legal Level of Budgetary Control Report (LLBC), and the Single Audit Report.

You will also oversee the state's general accounting operations, including maintenance of the general ledger and the accuracy of key statewide accounts such as cash, investments, and accounts receivable. This position plays a central role in shaping the state government's financial management practices, partnering closely with state finance professionals, leaders, policymakers, and auditors to uphold strong internal controls, maintain compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and state and federal legal requirements, and ensure that Minnesota's financial position is transparent, reliable, and well-understood.

As a key state finance leader, you will influence statewide financial policy, drive efficient and compliant accounting practices, and help preserve Minnesota's strong financial reputation.

Job duties for this position include:

  • Directing the preparation of the State of Minnesota's major audited financial reports, including the ACFR, LLBC Report, and Single Audit Report. This includes setting reporting practices and certifications, establishing timelines, coordinating with agencies and auditors, and ensuring all reports comply with GAAP and legal requirements.
  • Overseeing the state's general accounting operations, including maintenance of the statewide general ledger and the accuracy of key accounts such as cash, investments, and accounts receivable. You will also manage reconciliation processes, direct the annual Statewide Cost Allocation Plan, and maintain a system of strong internal controls for the state government's accounting and financial management.
  • Leading and developing the Statewide Accounting Section's staff, including the direct supervision of the section's supervisors, through goal-setting, performance management, hiring, coaching, and ongoing training and skills development. You will create an inclusive, high-performing team environment aligned with MMB's values and organizational goals.
  • Establishing and implementing statewide accounting policies and procedures to ensure consistent application of GAAP, compliance with state and federal laws, strong internal controls, and accurate financial data across all state agencies. This includes interpreting new accounting standards, advising agencies, and driving continuous improvements in financial reporting practices.
  • Serving as a key statewide expert and advisor on accounting and financial management issues, partnering with state agency finance professionals, leaders, policymakers, and auditors to provide accurate information and guidance.
  • Leading or coordinating special projects and statewide initiatives related to accounting, financial management, and process and IT system enhancements.

The successful candidate for this position will be eligible to telework. Telework options are dependent on where the employee lives. With approval, employees that live within 50 miles from the primary work location may telework up to 50%. Employees that live 50 miles or more from the primary location and live in Minnesota may telework more than 50% with approval.

  • Four (4) years of experience managing accounting functions for a large, complex organization, such as managing accounting operations or the preparation of audited financial statements and other audited reports and/or managing the internal or external audits of these functions.
  • Experience must include: A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in active or inactive status.
  • Demonstrated leadership, which can include any of the following:
    Experience as a supervisor, team lead, lead worker, or project lead in an accounting or auditing environment. Completion of a State leadership development program, such as Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) or Senior Leadership Institute (SLI), or completion of a similar or equivalent leadership program through another organization; OR A paid…
