Position: Collections Registration and Ramsey House Reinstallation Intern

POSTING DATE: June 26, 2026

LOCATION: History Center - 345 W Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55102 (Fall 2026 semester)

Alexander Ramsey House – 265 S Exchange St, St Paul, MN 55102 (Spring 2027 semester)

HOURS: This is a part‑time, temporary position from approximately September 14, 2026 to May 31, 2027. A part‑time intern must be available to work 15 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern’s school schedule and operational needs. Preferred working hours are shifts scheduled between Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.

DESCRIPTION

This two‑part internship will focus on collections inventory and registration duties culminating in the reinstallation of the Alexander Ramsey House. The registration intern will work with the Acquisitions Registrar and Collections Assistant to improve collections documentation, resolve collections storage issues, label objects, and assist with other relevant projects as they occur. These activities will train and prepare the intern for the Alexander Ramsey House reinstallation which will take place January - April, 2027.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create documentation and spreadsheets for registration projects
  • Research donation and object histories
  • Assist with object labeling and processing
  • Draft letters for outside communications related to projects
  • Assist with collections inventories at various MNHS sites
  • Consult with Acquisitions Registrar and Collections Assistant with problem solving
  • Produce concise reports on findings
  • Attend Collections dept. meetings when possible
  • Assist Ramsey House Project Registrar with reinstallation duties such as object unpacking, placement, and inventory control
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.
  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or have a graduate degree in the following areas:
    History, Art History, Museum Studies, Library/Information Science, Anthropology, etc.
  • Interest in and/or experience with museum collections
  • Attention to detail
  • Punctuality/dependability
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while also being able to collaborate effectively in a team environment
  • Experience with Google Workspace
  • Ability to lift/carry a 30lb box
  • Ability to climb stairs
KNOWLEDGE INTERN IS EXPECTED TO GAIN
  • Hands‑on experience with museum collections registration and management
  • Training in object handling and
  • Utilizing the collections management system (CMS/Emu) for research
  • Educational readings relevant to the work, their interests, and knowledge level
  • Participating in the reinstallation of the three story home of the Alexander Ramsey family
  • Working directly with the Project Registrar, Collections Management Staff, art handlers, and furniture movers to unpack and place approximately 15,000 books, artifacts, and pieces of fine art.
SEMINAR EVENTS

Interns are required to participate in three, in‑person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.
