Position Scope
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment on civil concrete projects. This role supports concrete, excavation, grading, and site preparation activities while maintaining production schedules, quality standards, and all safety requirements.
EssentialJob Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, backhoes, rollers, and compactors
- Assist with site preparation including grading, excavation, trenching, back filling, and material handling
- Support concrete operations by placing, spreading, and assisting with concrete pours as needed
- Perform finish grading to specifications using plans, stakes, or grade controls
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance (fueling, greasing, cleaning)
- Communicate effectively with foremen, ground crews, and other operators
- Follow all OSHA, company, and union safety regulations
- Maintain awareness of underground utilities, traffic control, and surrounding crews
- Keep equipment and work areas clean and orderly
- Union membership (or ability to join the applicable operators’ union)
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment in civil or concrete construction
- Ability to read grade stakes, plans, or layout markings (preferred)
- Knowledge of safe equipment operation and jobsite safety practices
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork skills
- Ability to work long hours in varying weather conditions
- Ability to climb in and out of equipment and maintain prolonged seated positions
- Adequate vision, hearing, and coordination for safe equipment operation
- Active civil construction sites such as roadways, bridges, foundations, and infrastructure projects
- Exposure to noise, dust, heavy machinery, and outdoor conditions
