Job Description

Position Overview:

High School for Recording Arts (HSRA) is seeking an equity-driven, creative, and culturally responsive Art Teacher Advisor to join our innovative team. At HSRA, advisors are more than classroom instructors—they are mentors, advocates, and co-designers of student‑centered learning journeys grounded in real‑world relevance, artistic expression, and social justice.

HSRA is a public charter high school where students design personalized learning plans and engage in interdisciplinary, project‑based learning that reflects their interests, experiences, and aspirations. Rooted in hip hop pedagogy, youth voice, and trauma‑informed practice, HSRA creates a culturally affirming space where all students—especially those historically underserved—can thrive.

Core Responsibilities Art Project‑Based Learning Facilitation
  • Design and facilitate interdisciplinary, standards‑aligned visual and media arts learning experiences that reflect students’ lived experiences, cultural identities, and artistic passions.
  • Guide students through authentic, real‑world art projects—such as mural design, digital media production, photography, painting, graphic design, sculpture, or mixed media—that integrate creative skills with critical thinking and social commentary.
  • Foster experimentation, innovation, and personal expression in the arts, helping students explore how creativity can be a tool for storytelling, activism, healing, and empowerment.
Advisory and Mentorship
  • Serve as a primary mentor and advocate for a cohort of students, supporting their growth as artists, thinkers, and emerging community voices.
  • Build strong, trust‑based relationships and guide students in navigating academic, personal, and postsecondary pathways, including careers and further education in the arts, design, media, or creative industries.
Arts, Culture, and Community Integration
  • Connect art learning to music, media, and cultural storytelling, using approaches like hip hop pedagogy, collaborative art projects, or socially engaged art practices.
  • Help students examine the role of art in community identity, cultural resistance, and social justice movements, and empower them to use their art to amplify youth voice.
Restorative and Trauma-Informed Practice
  • Create a supportive, inclusive classroom environment using trauma‑informed strategies, restorative circles, and social‑emotional learning tools.
  • Foster a safe and healing‑centered space where students can take creative risks, process lived experiences, and engage with personal and collective themes through art.
Commitment to Equity and Justice
  • Challenge systemic inequities in arts education through culturally relevant pedagogy, inclusive art practices, and an unwavering belief in the creative potential of all learners.
  • Center youth voices, cultural identities, and lived experiences in art teaching, learning, and collaborative decision‑making.
Collaborative Leadership
  • Contribute to a school wide culture of shared leadership and innovation.
  • Collaborate with fellow advisors, arts educators, and school leadership on curriculum development, interdisciplinary projects, and equity-focused arts programming.
Compensation and Benefits

HSRA offers a competitive salary and benefits package, along with a dynamic work environment where teachers are empowered to innovate and lead. Art Teacher Advisors have access to ongoing professional development focused on trauma-informed practice, culturally relevant pedagogy, and community‑based arts learning.

Qualifications
  • Valid Minnesota teaching license in Visual or Media Arts (or alternative pathway to licensure).
  • Deep commitment to racial equity, youth empowerment, and culturally relevant arts education.
  • Experience with project‑based learning, hip hop education, or arts-integrated instruction across visual, media, or performance arts.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with and support students affected by trauma and structural barriers.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and creative problem‑solving skills.
  • Willingness to grow professionally in areas such as trauma‑informed care, social justice education, and…
