Associate Chaplain For Muslim Life
The Associate Chaplain for Muslim Life, under the direction of the University Chaplain & Director of the Wesley Center Department, nurtures the whole lives of Muslim students, serves as a co-advisor for Multi-Faith Alliance (MFA), as well as educates and supports all students, staff and faculty. The Associate Chaplain works on a team with the Office of the University Chaplain (OUC) staff.
The OUC is tasked with fostering an inclusive interfaith community on campus.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Provide spiritual support and care for students, while referring them to Counseling and Health Services when needed.
- Mentor, teach, and support Muslim students exploring a religious vocation and/or graduate studies.
- Facilitate and foster student connections with the local Muslim community for learning and civic engagement opportunities as well as for services and holy days.
- Co-advise the Multi-Faith Alliance (MFA) SALD student organization. Provide mentorship and guidance to the Student Leads of this organization and mentorship for the MFA Scholars
- Mentor the MFA, Muslim Student Association (MSA) Student Lead and MSA Board in planning Muslim celebrations, events and programs.
- Serve as Professional Staff Support under the oversight and in collaboration with the Coordinator of the McVay Youth Partnership.
- Help mentor McVay Student Staff and the youth who are members of the program
- In collaboration with the Coordinator and the Wesley Center Program Assistant develop programming and initiatives strengthening ties between McVay, the Hamline Food For Thought Pantry, and the community.
- Offer blessings, invocations and benedictions as invited for public events and meals.
- Serve as a religious resource to the Hamline campus to develop interfaith literacy and cooperation.
- Support Muslim staff and faculty.
- Serve as a resource for incidents involving offensive speech or symbols in the residence halls and on campus.
- As a staff member of the OUC, contribute to religious responses to university, local and global crises.
- Attend Wesley Center Department staff meetings and staff retreats.
- Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes.
- Work with HU Marketing and Communications in the publicity of Muslim programs.
- Participate in Student Affairs general meetings.
- Help plan and participate in end of year events such as Graduation, Honors Day, and the Wesley Center Department End of Year Awards Ceremony and Celebration.
- Collaborate as part of the OUC Staff team in the planning of the Multi-Faith Baccalaureate ceremony, Holy Days calendar, Homecoming events, MFA programming, and MSA programming.
- Provide emergency coverage for students in crisis as requested by the Dean of Students Office when the University Chaplain is on vacation or out of town.
- Assist the University Chaplain
- Represent Hamline University in the larger interfaith community.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Reporting Relationships
- This position reports to the:
University Chaplain & Director of the Wesley Center - This position does not supervise other employees.
- This position will supervise 1-5 student workers

- Excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely, conveying complex information in a manner that others can understand, as well as ability to understand and interpret complex information from others.
- Be familiar and comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and exercise best practices regarding the maintenance of confidential student information.
- Experience and sensitivity working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience with multicultural competencies and experience in diversity integration.
- Regular use of Google and Google Apps Suite.
Minimum Education/Experience/Expectations
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
- One (1) Clinical Pastoral Education Credit
- Three (3) years programming with undergraduate students, teaching, and professional connection with a local mosque
- One (1) year professional experience supporting students in crisis.
- Availability for occasional nights and weekend work required.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Post-graduate work.
- Five (5) years congregational leadership experience.
