Position: 2026 - 27 TA 2 - Special Ed - Washington Tech High School

General Information

Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is looking to hire a TA 2 – Special Education for Washington Tech High School, St. Paul, MN for the 2026‑2027 school year.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, or
  • Two years of post‑secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution of higher education applicable toward a bachelor’s degree, or
  • A passing score on the Para Pro or Para educator Assessment AND either a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

  • Basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Ability to converse with students and staff as necessary and in accordance with students’ IEP.
  • Basic typing, copying and computer skills, including use of iPads; duplication may be required for some positions.

  • Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Warmth, friendliness and understanding in interactions with students.
  • Reliability in attendance, being on time every day.
Typical Duties

The essential job functions of a Teaching Assistant include but are not limited to the following duties, performed in various environmental conditions and may be assigned to any Teaching Assistant as needed to support students’ academics.

  • Assist in implementing student IEPs, 504 Plans, Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) and sensory plans.
  • Support the inclusion of students with disabilities in general education classrooms and environments.
  • Record data on students’ IEP objectives and BIPs for monitoring and adjusting programs.
  • Assist students with functional skills such as feeding, dressing, toileting and other self‑help activities; maintain toileting area and equipment; set up meal area and equipment.
  • Assist teachers with individual students in communication systems therapy, discipline, across the school day.
  • Be mobile and move around classrooms and schools to meet student needs.
  • Complete third‑party billing daily.
  • Provide follow‑up instruction on Positive Behavioral Interventions and implement de‑escalation strategies.
  • Be trained in Non‑violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) for de‑escalation and physical restraint techniques; use NVCI techniques only when necessary.
  • Assist in supporting students on field trips.
Other Requirements
  • Must physically lift more than 40 pounds when applicable.
  • Must be able to sit, walk, climb, crouch, kneel, push, talk and hear.
  • TA2 positions must be trained and maintain Special Education Orientation, NVCI, bus safety training, and CPR as required.
  • Upon assignment to a special education bus route, completion of basic first aid, CPR and bus safety training is required within 30 days; training will be provided by the district’s Transportation Department or via American Red Cross; certification must be renewed as needed.
Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

This is a 10‑month position working 35 hours per week.

Pay range: $20.19 – $25.47 for TA1; $21.63 – $28.48 for TA2.

Maximum hiring step: step four (4). Salary schedule in the Teachers contract. Further salary information is available on the Labor Agreements page and via the “Teaching Assistant” Labor agreement.
