Special Education Teacher
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for supporting Nova Classical's students with dedication, enthusiasm, adaptability, kindness, passion, and energy. Much of the work of the Special Education Teacher consists of preparing and providing lessons, and providing developmentally appropriate instruction in Special Education. The Special Education Teacher should also be able to supervise lessons to ensure that learners interact in a supportive and respectful manner.
The Special Education Teacher is employed at-will and operates as a professional within the guidelines established by Nova Classical Academy. In cooperation with Nova Classical staff and volunteers, the Special Education Teacher works to fulfill the school's mission in the following areas of responsibility:
Provide instruction of core curriculum and special education area(s) with appropriate use of instructional resources
Develop and implement Individual Education Plan(s) (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal requirements
Initiate and maintain contact with parents of special education students in support of academic achievement to meet IEP objectives
Complete required reports for parents and/or administration
Perform classroom management duties including enforcing student conduct rules and providing appropriate disciplinary action, as needed
Meet and/or exceed expectations on formal evaluations
Collaborate with staff, administration, and service providers for the successful creation and implementation of behavioral and/or learning plans
Supervise student contact in one-on-one, small group, and classroom settings
Attend grade level, faculty, staff and other meetings and/or training, as required
Adherence to and knowledge of Nova Classical policies and procedures
Support of and alignment to Nova Classical's principles of classical education, including but not limited to the Board-approved definition of classical education and its implementation under the direction of Nova's Academic Director
Other duties as assigned
Required qualifications and skills include:
Bachelor's or advanced degree in a relevant field
Valid Minnesota teaching license in K-12 Special Education including, but not limited to:
Academic and Behavioral Strategist, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Behavior Disorders, Developmental Disabilities, or ability to obtain
Student-focused and education oriented
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to student and other information
Demonstrated professional and technical knowledge in Special Education
Aptitude for work with students at various grade and development levels
Committed to professional and technical development through attendance at development activities, scheduled meetings, and relevant and/or required training
Desirable qualifications and skills include:
Current or previous experience working in a classical education environment
Experience as a Teacher, Educational Assistant, Paraprofessional, or Para Educator
Current or previous experience working in education
Physical demands include:
Duties are generally performed in a classroom and/or resource room setting, where some environmental hazards and/or risks may be present
Must be able to remain in a stationary position and/or walk for periods of one hour or more
Frequent lifting up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job
Exposure to various disagreeable conditions which may involve, but are not limited to, human/student contact, verbal outbursts, physical aggression, exposure to bodily fluids
Must be able to exchange accurate information with students, teachers, parents, and staff
Regular operation of computer or other office machines
Regular stooping, squatting, kneeling, reaching, bending, walking, or a combination of these
Occasional or frequent standing for periods of four (4) hours or more
Seasonal work outdoors in all weather conditions
Job summary:
The primary role of the Special Education Teacher is to enhance the learning environment for students by providing effective, personalized attention; engaging in appropriate instructional and behavioral support; and, modeling intellectual and principled living by demonstrating character and intellectual virtues in accordance with Nova Classical Academy's classical education tradition.
Wage hiring range: $46,860-$95,810 DOQ
Schedule:
187 contact days, including: 11 professional development days, 12 work days, plus 11 paid holidays. Reporting hours are 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM, with a 30 min lunch.
