Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional
General Information
Cherokee Heights Community School is looking to hire a TA 1 for a Pre‑K classroom for the 2026‑2027 school year. The role will be filled within 2‑4 weeks. Employees may be eligible for medical/dental/vision/pension benefits and accrue sick and vacation time.
Minimum Qualifications- One of the following:
An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree. - Two years of post‑secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution applicable toward a bachelor's degree.
- A passing score of 460 on the Para Pro Assessment and either a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic reading, writing and mathematics skills.
- Basic typing, copying and computer, iPad use. Duplicating may be required.
- Be racially conscious and support all students to achieve equitable outcomes.
- Develop good relationships with students and staff.
- Show sensitivity to the needs of others.
- Relate to students with warmth, friendliness and understanding.
- Arrive on time to work every day.
The essential job functions include supporting the licensed teacher and other staff in a regular education classroom and in any setting assigned.
- Work under the direction of a licensed teacher or other licensed instructional or nursing staff.
- Follow the daily schedule.
- Support all students, including those with 504 plans or IEPs.
- Monitor, observe and record student behavior; advise and correct behavior; review and correct student work; assist with workbooks and materials; maintain daily student records.
- Tutor students in reading, language arts, spelling, mathematics, social studies and other subjects.
- Assist teachers with checkout and check‑in of educational materials and consumables; organize and maintain instructional materials; set up and dismantle classroom equipment.
- Prepare, duplicate, assemble and distribute materials for teachers and other staff; use technology, including iPads; perform light typing; maintain bulletin boards; assist in program registration and fee collection; file documents; answer phones; deliver messages and meals to rooms.
- Participate in physical education activities; assist with low‑organized games.
- Assist in planning parties and special projects.
- Physically able to lift more than 40 pounds when applicable.
- Capable of sitting, walking, climbing, crouching, kneeling, pushing, talking and hearing.
TA 2s must complete the Special Education Orientation and Non‑violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training, bus safety training and CPR as required. Training must be completed within 30 days of being assigned to a special education bus route. Training will be provided by the District’s Transportation Department; completion from the American Red Cross is acceptable.
Pay, Benefits & Work ScheduleThis is a 10‑month position working 35 hours per week.
Pay ranges: TA 1: $20.19–$25.47; TA 2: $21.63–$28.48. Maximum hiring step is step 4. Full salary schedule is listed in the Teachers contract and can be found on the Labor Agreements page by selecting “Teaching Assistant” labor agreement.
