The Biology Department herine University invites applications for a full-time Biology Lab Manager position.
The Biology Department Lab Manager coordinates all teaching laboratories, including the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of supplies and equipment used in teaching and research. The Lab Manager consults with lab instructors and communicates effectively and respectfully with the department's diverse faculty and staff while developing and upholding departmental standards and procedures.
The Lab Manager supervises all Biology Department student workers, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, training, program oversight, and timesheet approval. In addition, the Lab Manager oversees the department's safety program and serves as the department representative at university-wide safety and facilities meetings.
Beyond their required responsibilities as the department Lab Manager, the person in this role is eligible to instruct lab sections as an adjunct instructor based on their qualifications.
Key Responsibilities- Keep labs stocked and running smoothly within the department's supply budget.
- Acquire necessary supply & equipment quotes.
- Facilitate ordering, receiving, stocking, inventory, waste disposal for 13 faculty members in 5 Biology teaching labs, stockroom (Mendel 42), equipment rooms, a cold room.
- Accurate budget record keeping and ability to forecast departmental supply needs against available budget.
- Develop and maintain an inventory system for supplies, chemicals, and materials in biology laboratories.
- Provide leadership, training, supervision, and employment opportunities for students to actively participate in Biology Department operations.
- Create, interview and hire student work positions (18-30/semester) for the Biology Department.
- Write job descriptions, interview students, train student employees, direct student employees, review and evaluate positions and employees annually.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students while setting departmental standards that must be adhered to.
- Create highly organized procedures and shift focus quickly to keep operations running smoothly.
- Bring a positive demeanor and good problem‑solving skills.
- Supervise student employees respectfully.
- Meet and discuss difficult scenarios with student employees.
- Approve student timesheets.
- Act as the Biology Lab consultant for 13 faculty teaching undergraduate Biology labs with special attention to Foundations of Biology 1 and 2 labs (BIO 1710 and 1720) (7-8 sections) and Anatomy & Physiology labs.
- Coordinate lab set‑ups and take‑downs with faculty and student workers. Create organized standardized lab protocols.
- Address equipment and facilities needs, including repair and maintenance.
- Management of laboratory spaces and reservations includes maintaining laboratory signage, physical space repair and maintenance.
- Coordinate with University Facilities and University safety team to ensure proper lab safety procedures are embedded in the biology department.
- The lab manager serves as the OSHA liaison and safety inspector.
- Encourage student engagement and help students organize and advocate for projects that impact the community, primarily through advising Bio Club.
- Must be flexible and manage time efficiently.
- Must operate under the University's Mission and Vision demonstrably through all facets of Laboratory Manager position.
- Coordinate Honey and Plant Sales.
- Assist in coordination of Bio symposium.
- Assist in department social media management.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Ability to learn and carry out implementation of OSHA safety standards in biology lab settings.
- Proficiency in MS Office and/or Google workspace.
- Understanding of general working operations of biology lab setting.
- Master's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.
- Good understanding of the diverse fields within biology and knowledge of where to locate order and operate supplies relevant to those fields.
- Exposure to and understanding of OSHA safety standards.
- Supervisory experience.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, and other standard office software.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
- Familiarity with digital record keeping and/or inventory management systems.
Annual wage is $42,474 - $59,467 depending on qualifications and experience.
