The primary purpose of the Career Development Specialist is to provide career coaching to students and recent alumni, co‑lead outreach initiatives and co‑coordinate programming for these groups.
Responsibilities- 70% direct student contact and 30% outreach and other responsibilities (ratio may change with the needs and goals of the office).
- Career
Coaching:
Provide one‑on‑one career coaching and instruction to students and alumni on issues related to career and vocational planning, including selecting a major, assistance on resumes, job search, interview preparation, and networking. Prepare students for recruiting activities through workshops, orientation sessions, appointments, and emails. Administer and interpret career inventories such as MBTI, SII, Strengths Finder. Guide students and alumni through the graduate and professional school application process, including application materials, entrance examinations (e.g., MCAT, DAT or GRE), personal statements, and interviews.
Assist in training new practicum students by allowing them to shadow appointments, answering questions and consulting on clients. Hold drop‑in hours to assist students with career‑related questions. Utilize Handshake for scheduling appointments, managing case notes, promoting events and workshops, etc. Maintain confidential student records and case notes. - Career Readiness: Collaborate with academic departments to integrate Career Readiness Competencies across the curriculum, connecting the competencies to the Hamline plan and all Hamline majors. Assist with developing and sharing resources with faculty and staff for utilizing the competencies when advising students. Assist with training faculty and staff regarding career readiness at Hamline.
- Events & Programs: Collaborate with CDC staff to develop online modules (videos, worksheets, etc.) through Canvas. Update and create major information binders, handouts, and website materials. Assist in implementing the Major Exploration Night plan, coordinate, and instruct Resume, Linked In, and additional workshops for students. Collaborate with Alumni Relations in planning the Etiquette Dinner and assist with other CDC events (employer events, panels, class presentations, etc.),
identifying panelists, coordinating logistics. Represent CDC at events and programs; participate on panels, presentations, orientations, etc. Attend and assist students at the Education Job Fair, Government and Nonprofit Career Fair, and MPCCC Job and Internship Fair, and assist with student preparation for each. Assist in developing and implementing a Graduate School Panel. Assist with approving events and programs in Handshake. - Outreach & Campus Involvement: Initiate tabling and presentations based on outreach needs of the CDC. Present on CDC services or career development topics to classes or student groups. Build partnerships with faculty through presentations and resource‑sharing. Work with CDC staff to develop and implement marketing plans and materials, including the use of social media to promote CDC events, programs, and services.
Market events through direct outreach to students and faculty, collaborating departments/offices. Participate on committees within Student Affairs and campus wide as time permits. Through campus programming, connect employers/alumni with students to promote job, internship, networking and mentoring opportunities. - Professional & Staff Development: Assume leadership roles within MCUCSA/MPCCC as appropriate. Participate in Student Affairs professional development and diversity programming.
