Senior Land Surveyor
The Contra Costa County Public Works Department offers an opportunity for the position of Senior Land Surveyor located in Martinez, California.
Responsibilities- Acts as the County Surveyor in the incumbent’s absence.
- Assigns and schedules work for survey parties and/or one or more office units.
- Trains survey staff in the use of contemporary survey methods and equipment.
- Assists in the hiring and evaluation of personnel, and recommends disciplinary action.
- Selects the methods, procedures and accuracies of field work and determines appropriate calculation and adjustment methods.
- Specifies the format and information to be shown on maps and documents and reviews the accuracy of the work product developed by operational units.
- Assists in survey equipment evaluations, draft specifications and justifications for input into the budget process.
- Clarifies and approves the scope of work for Survey Requests by meeting with the design engineers, architects, environmentalists, real property agents and other professionals to determine final requirements.
- Prepares scope of work and project specifications for consultant land surveyor’s work products or services, determines appropriate costs for service and participates in the selection and negotiation of contracts for survey work performed by consultants.
- Coordinates construction‑staking requirements with the Construction Division for Capital Improvement Program (C.I.P.) projects.
- Researches and analyzes prior survey information for suitability with new survey requests.
- Reviews the survey work prepared by others for completeness and accuracy.
- Coordinates with maintenance division for perpetuation of monuments.
License
Required:
possession of a valid driver’s license.
Registration
Required:
possession of a valid Certificate Registration as a Licensed Land Surveyor issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Experience: Four (4) years of full-time (or equivalent) land surveying experience, including a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience equivalent to or higher than the County’s Engineering Technician Supervisor‑Land Surveyor classification.

An oral interview will be conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez, CA. Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of the Board members to be ranked on the employment list (Weighted 100%).
