Job Description

This Civil Drafter role supports a small engineering consulting team focused on land development projects across a variety of commercial and residential sites. You will take projects from initial design through completion by preparing detailed plans, coordinating with clients to define project scope, and supporting stormwater planning, permitting, and regulatory compliance. The position offers a blend of independent work and close collaboration with experienced engineers, providing strong exposure to all aspects of site development and the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility and impact.

Responsibilities

+ Prepare detailed civil drafting and design plans for land and site development projects, from concept through final construction documents.

+ Collaborate with clients to understand project objectives, clarify the scope of work, and incorporate feedback into design plans.

+ Support stormwater planning and analysis, including drainage and grading design, to ensure effective site water management.

+ Assist with permitting processes and help ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements for each project.

+ Develop site plans and related civil design documents for a variety of project types, including commercial and residential developments.

+ Coordinate with engineers to translate engineering concepts and calculations into accurate, constructible drawings.

+ Participate in planning and design activities for site development projects, helping to refine layouts, grading, and utility plans.

+ Support project management activities by tracking drafting tasks, communicating progress, and helping to meet project deadlines.

+ Work both independently and as part of a small engineering team, taking ownership of assigned tasks with minimal oversight when needed.

+ Collaborate closely with field crews to ensure that design intent is clearly communicated and constructible in the field.

Essential Skills

+ At least 3 years of experience in civil drafting, civil design, or a closely related civil engineering support role.

+ Proficiency with Civil 3D for civil drafting and design tasks.

+ Hands-on experience in land development and site development projects.

+ Knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals as they relate to site and land development.

+ Experience preparing construction documents and site plans for civil projects.

+ Background in drainage and grading design for site development.

+ Experience supporting or participating in project management activities within civil or site development projects.

+ Ability to work independently at times while also collaborating effectively within a small engineering team.

+ Strong communication skills for working directly with clients and internal stakeholders to understand and define project scope.

Work Environment

The role is based in a small, office-based engineering and surveying environment located in the Eagan metro area. The team consists of approximately ten people across engineering and surveying, with the engineering group currently at two team members and growing due to a recent retirement. All team members work on-site in the office, fostering close collaboration and frequent interaction. You will work directly with the owner and a project manager, receiving extensive training and professional development from them.
