ThisOpportunity
We are seeking a Geologist II to support MnDOT transportation and environmental projects! In this role, you will be on the front lines of environmental and infrastructure work, supporting site investigations, construction monitoring, contaminated soil management, and remediation projects that directly impact critical transportation systems.
You will lead and support field teams, guide daily field activities, and play a key role in ensuring accurate, high-quality data collection and reporting in dynamic field conditions. YourKey Responsibilities
- Provide geological field support on various environmental site assessments including corridor Phase I and Phase II environmental site investigations
- Provide field oversight in large scale and long-term transportation construction monitoring projects; screen soil and direct contractors in the management of contaminated soil;
- Complete onsite investigations of contaminated soil, sediment and groundwater; construction observation; and preparation of drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections and technical reports.
- Lead a team of construction monitoring technicians; prepare detailed instructions for field staff and assist in directing their project work; ensure consistency in project execution and documentation; assist in coordination and scheduling to staff multiple construction monitoring projects.
- Accurately prepare field notes, soil boring logs, site sketches and other documentation of actions undertaken during site investigation, construction monitoring, and remediation projects; organize, digitize and file field notes in Document Locator in a timely manner.
- Prepare project deliverables including work plans, MnDOT-specific Phase I and Phase II reports, construction monitoring reports, bidding specifications, and other correspondence using technical writing and analysis skills.
- Collaboratively work and coordinate with other staff to problem solve and produce high quality creative solutions for our customers.
- Conduct field work as requested, to include out-of-town travel for up to two weeks at a time, multiple times a year
- Read/understand SOPs and train on specific field tasks
- Accurately and efficiently conduct environmental sampling (air, water, soil, sediment) in accordance with the supplied work plan and SOPs
- Utilize and maintain field equipment in accordance with Bay West SOPs
- Help resolve problems as they arise in the field
- Manage schedule and relationships to maintain utilization goals and complete activities within promised time frames
- Demonstrate competency with field activities, including various methods of drilling, soil, and groundwater sampling
- Independently oversee drilling and excavation crews, including conducting health and safety tailgate meetings and directing field crews
- Ability to travel up to 30%.
Required Qualifications
- BS - Geology, Earth Sciences, or Related
- 2 to 5 years of experience in Geology/Geologist role
- Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain within 30 days
- Able to obtain site access to secure areas such as Federal or State sites
