Job Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to lead and manage the accounting, payroll, and student accounts departments. This position is responsible for the integrity of the University’s financials, safeguarding the University’s financial assets, providing accurate and timely financial information (e.g., audits, tax filings, grants, accounts payable, student accounts, etc.) to internal and external constituents, billing and collecting tuition, and leading and developing staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Leads, supervises, and develops staff to inspire professionalism, strong inter- and intra-departmental communication, and team building.
  • Responsible for accounting and student accounts departments and fostering a respectful workplace culture, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Promotes collaboration at all levels and empowers staff to be innovative decision-makers.
  • Uses data and continuous-improvement methods to drive employee work and achieve results.
  • Provides effective management through supervision, delegation, coaching, and training.
  • Evaluates and handles job performance issues, performance evaluations, and recognition.
  • Assists with recruitment, selection, and training of employees.
  • Responsible for accounting information: prepares, reviews, and approves transactions in Workday ERP.
  • Coordinates the external audits of the University’s financial statements.
  • Prepares the federal and state nonprofit tax returns.
  • Assists in accurately maintaining and reporting endowment activities and balances.
  • Assists in providing information on donors/grantors to ensure accurate recording and classification of gifts.
  • Monitors and maintains cash balances; performs wire transfers, debt payments, and ACH transactions.
  • Prepares quarterly financial statements in accordance with GAAP and FASB.
  • Prepares compliance reporting, cash forecasting, and quarterly debt covenant calculations and certifications.
  • Monitors budget compliance, assists in budget analysis and preparation.
  • Performs and oversees reconciliations.
  • Prepares ad‑hoc reports.
  • Responsible for the accounting system (Workday) and maintains financial security.
  • Maintains financial system chart of accounts setup, posting rules, and configuration.
  • Acts as a resource to student accounts manager and payroll manager on ERP setup and configuration.
  • Provides accurate and timely information to internal and external constituents on financial and statistical data.
  • Establishes and maintains operational policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Prepares and submits financial surveys.
  • Provides support on special projects and performs other duties as requested.
Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration/Chief Financial Officer and supervises 6–10 employees.

Budget Management Responsibilities

Responsible for the accounting department and student accounts department budgets. Budget range: $100,001–$500,000.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Key Competencies
  • Knowledge of and experience in business management with emphasis in general ledger, budgeting, accounts payable, information systems, GAAP and FASB.
  • Demonstrated success in providing leadership and supervision of staff and projects.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to make timely decisions on accounting matters.
  • Effective problem‑solving.
  • Expertise with web‑based systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
