About the Job
This Finance Professional 3 position is an integral component of the 13 person accounting team of the Medicine Administrative Center. The position can be worked 100% remotely or in a hybrid model, with attendance required for up to two in-person workshops per year in Minnesota. Employees will be responsible for covering any travel costs incurred while attending the workshops.
Responsibilities45% Research Accounting
- Determining appropriate payroll percentages for labor charging and effort certification and entering them in a timely manner.
- Auditing and approving expenditures, ensuring compliance with university and sponsor policies.
- Developing financial projections and working with faculty and/or staff to research the source and cause of discrepancies in accounting systems.
- Assist with renewals and closeout of projects.
35% Budget Analysis & Reporting
- Reviews and distributes monthly sponsored and non-sponsored reports based upon established deadlines.
- Proactively analyzes reports and trends, informs and partners with faculty to develop financial plans and/or find alternative funding sources.
- Supports the annual budget process for the assigned division.
15% Certified Approver & Effort Certification
- Audits and approves expenditures on sponsored research projects.
- Interprets grant and contract regulations and their relation to university accounting procedures, identifies areas of concern, and recommends solutions.
- Provides departmental expertise on expenditure requirements and policy.
- Coordinates the effort certification process.
- Reviews effort statements and works with faculty to resolve discrepancies.
5% Process Improvements & Miscellaneous Analysis
- Acts as a backup to support other team members.
- Serves as a departmental representative on medical school and/or central committees.
- Provides data and recommendations to managers regarding account and/or fund balances, budgeting practices, and accounting functions.
- Coordinates activities with project leaders, financial staff and outside agencies.
- Completes other projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS plus at least 4 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years.
- Prior experience with financial reporting and analyses.
- Proficiency with Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as effectively in formal and informal team arrangements.
- Certified Approver or the ability to obtain within one year.
- Project accounting, preferably with sponsored research accounting.
- Experience with the University of Minnesota financial management information systems and EFS Peoplesoft accounting system, or accounting/fiscal experience in a public, comprehensive higher education institution with considerable knowledge of administrative policies and procedures typical of a public institution of higher education.
- Fund accounting skills.
- Ability to interpret and present and analyze information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members and individuals.
- Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to use good judgment in prioritizing multiple requests made at times by persons with competing interests.
Pay Range: $75,000-$93,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
