Are you passionate about protecting public health and ensuring the quality and safety of environmental laboratory testing across Minnesota? The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking a dedicated leader to serve as the Nuclear/Radiological Emergency Preparedness & Response Supervisor. In this role, you will lead statewide preparedness, response, and recovery activities related to nuclear and radiological incidents. This position provides supervisory, technical, and policy leadership for the Nuclear/Radiological Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit and ensures MDH is prepared to protect public health and emergency workers during radiological events.

The supervisor oversees specialized technical staff, manages state and federally funded preparedness programs, and serves as a key advisor to MDH leadership and to state, tribal, local, and federal partners. This role requires expertise in radiation health, emergency management, and risk communication, as well as the ability to lead in high‑pressure emergency response environments.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Supervise staff by setting expectations, approving time and leave, conducting evaluations, and supporting staff development.
  • Lead and oversee statewide nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness, response, and recovery programs to protect public health.
  • Provide expert radiation health and technical guidance during planning, drills, exercises, and real‑world emergency events.
  • Develop and manage program budgets, grants, and work plans to ensure compliance, sustainability, and effective operations.
  • Coordinate with local, tribal, state, federal, and academic partners to strengthen preparedness, response capabilities, and communication.

The work location of this position is St. Paul, MN with some work being performed throughout the metro area. This position is currently eligible for up to 50% hybrid telework for applicants residing in Minnesota or a bordering state within 50 miles of the work location. The telework policy may exempt employees who live more than 50 miles from their primary work location from the 50% in‑office requirement to help the State of Minnesota benefit from top talent in every corner of the state.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in public health, environmental health, emergency management, radiation safety, or a closely related field, including supervising staff and providing technical or policy guidance for emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience such as coaching, mentoring, developing staff while building relationships.
  • Experience leading a new initiative that includes integration with numerous partners.
