The Web Content & Digital Experience Lead serves as the primary web strategist, content architect, and digital experience specialist for the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). This position is responsible for strengthening the college's web ecosystem and ensuring its digital experiences are accessible, audience-centered, strategically organized, and aligned with college and University priorities.

The Web Content & Digital Experience Lead oversees web content governance, information architecture, accessibility, search engine optimization, and user experience improvements across the college's primary digital properties. The position works closely with embedded communicators, departmental web editors, information technology teams, and University partners to ensure CSE's digital presence effectively serves prospective and current students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry partners, and other key audiences.

The position plays an important role in establishing shared standards and improving the effectiveness of a large, decentralized web environment. Success in this role requires expertise in content management systems, accessibility standards, user experience principles, digital governance, web analytics, and cross-functional collaboration.

Location and Work Environment

Location: Twin Cities Campus, University of Minnesota

Work Environment: Hybrid

Expected Work Schedule
  • Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.

    -4:30 p.m.
  • Minimum of three days per week in the office, with Monday and Wednesday expected as on-campus collaboration days
  • Up to two days per week remote, consistent with department and University policies
  • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support major website launches, urgent web updates, college initiatives, or time-sensitive matters
45% Lead Web Strategy, Information Architecture, and User Experience
  • Serve as the primary administrator and strategic lead for the college's web properties within the University's content management system.
  • Create, configure, and maintain web content, page layouts, navigation structures, and digital components that support communications and institutional priorities.
  • Develop and maintain information architecture, site taxonomies, navigation systems, and content structures that help audiences find and understand the information they need.
  • Analyze user behavior, navigation patterns, search activity, and website performance to identify opportunities to improve the digital experience.
  • Develop and implement search engine and generative AI optimization strategies, metadata standards, redirect plans, and content optimization practices.
  • Collaborate with college and departmental partners to develop digital experiences that support student recruitment, research visibility, reputation, alumni engagement, and other strategic objectives.
  • Plan and conduct content inventories, website audits, and user experience assessments to identify outdated, duplicative, or ineffective content.
  • Recommend and implement ongoing improvements based on audience needs, analytics, accessibility requirements, and institutional priorities.
30% Lead Accessibility and Web Quality
  • Serve as one of the college's primary resources for digital accessibility standards, requirements, and best practices.
  • Audit websites and digital content to assess alignment with University policies and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Identify, prioritize, and help remediate accessibility issues involving page structure, alternative text, color contrast, navigation, documents, multimedia, and other digital content.
  • Manage web quality assurance and monitoring tools that support accessibility, usability, content accuracy, and policy compliance.
  • Work with content owners to develop practical remediation plans and address recurring accessibility or content-quality concerns.
  • Monitor changes to accessibility requirements and advise college partners about their implications for web content and publishing practices.
  • Incorporate accessibility into website planning, content development, redesigns, and other digital projects from the outset.
20% Establish Web Governance and Support Content Contributors
  • Develop and maintain web governance standards, content guidelines, publishing practices, and shared expectations for decentralized content contributors.
  • Provide consultation, training, documentation, and ongoing support to departmental web editors and communicators across the college.
  • Build productive relationships with web contributors who have varying levels of technical expertise and communications responsibilities.
  • Help departments organize and improve their web content while balancing local needs with college and University standards.
