Job OverviewThe Mortlockese Telephone Interpreter handles on-demand calls, rendering the meaning of conversations between Mortlockese and English speakers across a wide range of industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The role is fully remote and requires a quiet and secure home‑office environment.
Essential Job Functions- Respond promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain a professional demeanor throughout interpreting sessions at all times.
- Remain calm during sessions where primary speakers may be incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
- Maintain punctuality and availability during designated work hours.
- Follow client instructions and comply with protocol to meet client expectations for the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP), avoiding interaction with the LEP without client permission.
- Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including, but not limited to, medical, insurance, finance, and law.
- Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and to working in a diverse environment.
- Remain on a call for extended periods without breaks when necessary due to high call volumes or emotionally stressful content, and provide service that meets company standards.
- Fluency in Mortlockese and English and skill in related cultural dynamics.
- Ability to assess regional and accent differences to facilitate effective communication with the LEP.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy during interpretation.
- Concentration, detachment, neutrality, and objectivity in sensitive conversations such as end‑of‑life discussions, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters concerning sexual orientation and/or gender expression.
- Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation is preferred.
- Ability to adapt to any LLS technology enhancements that improve service delivery and meet client demands.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring future visa sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current employment with a client of Language Line Solutions or an affiliated business may disqualify the applicant.
- Ability to read and write the requested languages is highly preferred.
- Post‑offer background check and/or drug screen may be required based on location.
- Dedicated personal device for business purposes.
- Desktop or laptop computers with Windows, macOS, or Chrome
OS. - Tablets (iPadOS or Android) are acceptable.
- Smartphones (iOS or Android) are acceptable.
- Restricted hardware:
Kaspersky products and Huawei devices. - High‑speed Internet: download speeds ≥ 5
Mbps, upload speeds ≥ 3
Mbps, ping ≤ 300ms, jitter ≤ 30ms. - Access to a quiet space free from background noise or distraction.
- Operate a keyboard and mouse and remain in a stationary position before a computer for the majority of the workday.
- Operate company‑provided software and systems to perform all aspects of the job.
- Possess sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
- Lift up to 26lbs.
- May be exposed to moderate noise levels (computer audio, telephone, etc.).
