Position: 2026-27 EA2 - Interpreter, ASL - 271 Belvidere

Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is looking to hire a full-time EA2 - Interpreter, ASL for our 271 Belvidere Building in St. Paul, MN. The position will be filled within 2–4 weeks. Employees may be eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Pension benefits, and accrue sick and vacation time.

Position Summary

Specialized services for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing are provided in the educational setting as determined by the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Program responsibilities include facilitation in the use of, and the production of American Sign Language (ASL), accommodations to the learning environment, implementation of specific instructional strategies, adaptations and modifications to the curriculum, and the use of assistive technology, augmentative communication devices and other supplemental aids.

“Deaf” is used inclusively to refer to all students with hearing loss in need of ASL interpreting services, including D/deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, deaf/disabled, and Deaf Plus students.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • An associate’s degree, or two years of post-secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution applicable toward a bachelor’s degree.
  • Completion of a formal Interpreter Training Program (ITP) affiliated with an accredited institution.
  • Hold a current interpreter/transl iterator certification per Minnesota Statutes 122A.31.
  • New graduates of an interpreter/transl iterator program affiliated with an accredited educational institution will be considered if granted a two‑year provisional certificate by the State of Minnesota Education Commissioner. During the two‑year provisional period, the interpreter/transl iterator must develop and implement an education plan in collaboration with a mentor and obtain the required certifications under the provisions of Minnesota Statutes 122A.31, Subdivision 1.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
  • Experience working in urban schools with diverse student populations.
  • Educational ASL interpreting experience in urban schools with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of IEP processes and educational accommodations for students with hearing loss.
  • Experience with mentoring provisionally certified ASL interpreters and willingness to act in that role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong receptive and expressive American Sign Language skills.
  • Understanding of Deaf culture, identity, and diverse communication skills.
  • Knowledge of educational interpreting and the social‑emotional needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to modify interpreting techniques based on the student’s language level, cognitive ability, and instructional context.
  • Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
  • Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness, and understanding, including sensitivity to the needs of others.
  • Effective team member possessing strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt and complete tasks on time and with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in multiple communication techniques with Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Articulate basic information regarding communication methods, types of hearing losses, and the sociology of the Deaf community.
  • Articulate differences inherent to interpreting in an educational setting compared with other types of interpreter tasks and settings.
  • Adapt interpreting style, language, and mode to best fit the needs of students.
  • Maintain professional and ethical boundaries aligned with the interpreter Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Explain and defend the use of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or the National Association of the Deaf Code of Ethics.
