Railcar Repairman (Carman)
Job OverviewRepairs, modifies, and upgrades rail cars; rebuilds car components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors. Performs mechanical labor (approx. 95% of time). Uses hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and welding equipment to maintain railcars per blueprints and specifications.
Operates forklift, measures, cuts, threads pipes, replaces air lines, and assembles subassemblies and major components. Enters car repair information via an electronic system.
Responsibilities- Repair and maintain railcars in accordance with blueprints and specifications.
- Rebuild car components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors.
- Weld (10-30% of time) and fabricate using a cutting torch.
- Perform mechanical labor, frequently handling and moving parts.
- Operate forklift to move, align and set parts.
- Measure, cut, thread pipes and replace air lines with hand tools.
- Assemble subassemblies, major components, and equipment; test for proper operation.
- Enter repair information via electronic keyboard system.
- Maintain a clean work environment.
- Use metalworking tools such as welder or grinder as needed.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Complete each task within specified time standards.
- Meet customer requirements (AAR, FMO, FRA, TTX, etc.).
- Adhere to all work rules and safety procedures.
- Circular saw.
- Air impacts 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch and air/grinder 4 inch, 7 inch, 9 inch.
- Portable air or hydraulic power pump and ram.
- Various hand tools.
- Cutting torch and heating torch for bending; side grinder; hoist; winch.
- Steel‑toe shoes, hard hat, earplugs, safety glasses, welding shield, burning goggles, grinding shield, and proper clothing.
- Stand, hear and see for 8‑10 hours; handle, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and finger for 6 hours.
- Reach below waist, twist, feel, and bend at the waist for 2 hours.
- Lifting car parts 1‑80 lbs throughout the day (10‑25 lbs frequent, 25‑50 lbs regular, >50 lbs occasional).
- Wrenches up to 10 lbs to tighten bolts approximately 4 hours per week.
- Pulling loads 10‑25 lbs frequent, 25‑50 lbs regular, >50 lbs occasional; carry 50‑75 lbs.
- Mechanical skills and knowledge.
- Welding and cutting skills.
- Decision‑making, reasoning, planning and scheduling at intermediate level.
- Memory and information handling at intermediate level.
- Outdoor work 8‑10 hour shifts; exposure to heat, cold, humidity, moving machinery and heights.
- Exposure to welding and burning fumes, dust, gases, and noise.
- Work with oil, grease and vibrations; may work alone occasionally.
- 8‑10 hour shifts; shift work, nights, weekends and holidays may occur.
- Available for flexible schedule, including shift work and mandatory training.
Reports to the line supervisor or work group supervisor.
Pay RateStarts at $28/hour; adjusted based on Carman/Journeyman status.
