Position: CNC Programmer / Machinist

The CNC Programmer / Machinist provides timely support to Machine Shop employees providing programed parts using CAM software. They work collaboratively with Machinist, Engineering, Routing Analyst, and Machine Shop Manager to determine the most cost effective machining methods. Machine parts to print in a safe timely manner using CNC Mill & Millturn Optimizes tool life and reduces programming and machine run time to maximize output and reduce costs.

The CNC Programmer/Machinist job description is intended to point out major duties and authorities within the position, but it is not limited to these items.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Oversees the programming of machined parts at optimal cost.
  • Determines the most efficient process for making parts and creates CNC programs using CAM Software for the Machine Shop.
  • Selects raw materials, cutting tools, and miscellaneous shop supplies to be ordered by the Purchasing Department for special parts requirements.
  • Makes recommendations on and assists with the purchase of required machine shop tooling to improve machining efficiencies.
  • Stays abreast of new cutting tool technologies and implements required programming changes to reduce machining time.
  • Reviews and implements cost reduction ideas in relation to machining methods and tools.
  • Oversees the flow of programed parts according to priority and need date.
  • Reviews capacity and plans their workday based on requirements/due dates. Advises their manager of progress and any issues.
  • Review daily machine shop priorities and assures parts are programed accordingly.
  • Responds to the needs of the Machinist promptly to change programs.
  • Assists in expediting programing of parts to meet delivery due dates.
  • Creates and maintains set up sheets (i.e. program and revision changes.)
  • Coordinates changes in the CAM program parameters with the machinists.
  • Works closely with the Scheduler and Machine Shop Manager to assist with expediting programming activities.
  • Machines parts in a safe, quality oriented and efficient manor by priority in Synchrono or under the direction of the Machine Shop Manager.
  • Operates a variety of CNC equipment.
  • Reduces set up time and runtimes and submits routing request as required.
  • Process any expedited job request not listed I Synchrono and document the job description and time required to complete on a machine shop time sheet.
  • Fill out and turn in machine shop time sheet daily.
  • Assure cleanliness and maintenance of equipment assigned.
  • Clean work area as needed but completely at the end of the shift; keeps work area in an environmentally safe condition at all times.
  • Monitor daily/monthly maintenance of Machine assigned.
  • Keeps machine tools organized.
  • Make recommendations on improvements and changes for future jobs.
  • Work collaboratively with other machinists to develop best practices.
  • Create fixtures to assist with production and maintain a log of those items.
  • Works with Machine Shop Manager and Engineering Department on design changes to improve manufacturability. Redlines drawings to document changes.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate the forklift on the assembly floor (if certified).
  • Assist with the training of new assembly floor employees.
  • Proposes suggestions for improvements.
  • Assist with setting up of machines.
  • Assist with crating, and shipment of machines.
  • Ensure change parts and spare parts are included in the shipping crate when required.
  • Complete or update the assembly check off sheet during the build process.
  • Perform other tasks or duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a manufacturing environment with experience and a thorough understanding of machining and CNC/CAM programing. Strong preference for experience with CAMWorks.
  • Two-year degree in Machining or CAD/CAM preferred
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience running the following machines: CNC 5

    Axis Mill, CNC Mill turn Lathe, NC Mill, and NC Lathe.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling software – Solid Works
Technical

Skills and Abilities
  • Able to read, understand and analyze engineering drawings of piece parts. Proficiency in sound dimension practices - GD&T knowledge preferred.
