The Impact You'll Make in this Role
The person hired for this Senior X-ray Scientist position will join a team of research chemists, physicists and engineers in the Corporate Research Lab of 3M and apply their X-ray scattering expertise and experience to invent, develop, and create new business opportunities and support existing 3M products and businesses. This position offers a chance to work on exciting technologies at the heart of tomorrow's most creative products.
As a(n) Senior X-ray Scientist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
* Applying X-ray scattering measurement and theory to solve complex material challenges and advance R&D analytical capabilities
* Collaborate with a team of chemists, physicists and engineers on both theoretical and practical projects that will use scientific, mathematical and X-ray skills to drive new-to-the-world technology development and introduction
* Develop and implement relevant and valuable X-ray scattering technologies that support 3M research and development
* Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports, to communicate findings and progress to stakeholders
* Remain current with the latest advancements in X-ray technologies and incorporate relevant innovations into your work
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
* Master's degree (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.
* Four (4) years of experience with X-ray research techniques in a public, private, academic, government or military environment.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
* PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.
* Strong expertise in X-ray scattering and diffraction
* Domain expertise in X-ray scattering, X-ray Diffraction, X-ray microscopy, and X-ray computed tomography (CT), data analytics, and data science
* Experience in programming languages:
Python
* Strong scientific and technical acumen, with demonstrated interest and ability to make connections between science/technology and real-world concerns.
* Solid understanding of experimental techniques for X-ray characterization and testing, in particular on in organics, ceramics, nanoparticles, and polymers.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey technical information
* Experience leading projects

Lab-based on site in Maplewood, MN
Travel:
