About the Job
This role is responsible for performing a variety of experimental analyses of influenza virus and other respiratory viruses, as well as analyzing and presenting collected data. This role also participates in training students and full-time researchers. This role also assists in general lab management.
Recognized as an expert in research work. Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise to competently carry out duties. Interprets internal or external issues and recommends solutions/best practices. Solves complex and varied problems; takes a broad disciplinary perspective to identify solutions. Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex, solution-resistant situations.
Essential Functions -- 50% - Develops protocols for and performs complex in vitro virology experiments with influenza virus, coronavirus and rhinovirus. Manages complex general molecular biology and animal experiments.
- 20% - Performs lab management duties, including resource planning. Oversees the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and provides training.
- 15% - Analyzes complex data to draft high-quality manuscripts for publication. Collaborates with the PI and lab members to co-author grant proposals.
- 10% - Mentors and trains graduate students and junior researchers in experimental protocols to optimize laboratory operations.
- 5% - Presents the results of experiments in meetings.

Required Qualifications:BA/BS degree plus at least five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and work experience in viral immunology to equal at least nine years
Experience working with influenza viruses and coronaviruses
Experience working in the mouse model of influenza virus
About the DepartmentThe Department of Microbiology and Immunology (DMI) is a basic science department in the University of Minnesota (UMN) School of Medicine. Our faculty focus on the study of microorganism and host interactions, and engage in translational research to build and evaluate preclinical and clinical applications of research discoveries aimed at mitigating disease. The department seeks to build on our rich history as we pursue transformational research.
DMI faculty have a strong focus on immunology, virology, bacteriology, and fungal biology and they include research and training activities encompassing studies of microbial physiology and genetics, the immune response to infection based around a central theme of interrogating the systems biology of infection, immunity, and diseases.
Pay Range: $34.00 to $37.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
