The Criminal Justice Research Analyst will contribute to the work of Minnesota's Statistical Analysis Center (MNSAC) under the direction of the Research Director, Office of Justice Programs (OJP) at the Department of Public Safety. The mission of MNSAC is to collect and analyze data relating to crime and the juvenile and criminal justice systems, provide accurate information and analysis on emerging and critical issues, and support informed policy, program, and funding decisions through data and research.

This position will also support the work of OJP units and offices as it relates to research and program evaluation.

Primary duties include working independently and with research team members and diverse stakeholders to design and conduct quantitative and mixed methods research studies; quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis, and management; program evaluation; literature and policy review; research dissemination tasks; and technical assistance.

Employees may telework up to 50%, depending on the position and the needs of the division, with the other 50% in person at the Town Square office location in St Paul, MN.

Minimum Qualifications

Three* (3) years of research experience collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data in criminal and juvenile justice, public heath, public policy, social science, or related area that included:

  • Independently designing, conducting, and interpreting quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed-methods research or program evaluations.
  • Analyzing complex datasets and developing findings, recommendations, technical reports, or other written products to support policy, program, or funding decisions.
  • Applying statistical methods and using statistical software (such as Stata, SPSS, R, or similar) to analyze and interpret data.
  • Presenting complex research findings to technical and non-technical audiences and effectively collaborating with multiple stakeholders from multiple organizations.
  • Demonstrated organization and time management skills to independently complete research tasks across multiple projects with competing deadlines and ability to pivot when priorities shift.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities.

  • Ability to review and present data in an unbiased manner to carefully consider diverse perspectives and the data needs of policy makers and the public.
  • Ability and commitment to maintain data in accordance with federal law and a high level of research ethics.
  • Ability to identify problems over the course of the research process and promptly develop solutions.

* A completed graduate degree that provided sufficient training in statistics/research methods (e.g., social sciences, public health, public policy) from an accredited program may substitute the following:
