Department Overview

Proudly serving as Minnesota’s children’s hospital since 1924, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota is the eighth-largest pediatric health care organization in the U.S. It provides care through nearly 13,000 inpatient visits and more than 200,000 emergency room and other outpatient visits each year. Children’s has 319 staffed hospital beds and offers services in all major pediatric specialties. In addition to Minneapolis and St.

Paul campuses, the organization includes Children’s West in Minnetonka, Children’s - Roseville, and Children’s Clinics - Woodwinds.

Position Summary

The Security Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure Children’s campus. The Security Supervisor will supervise security staff (officers and dispatchers), including assigning work, training, coaching, and discipline. The core role is to promote a safe environment for patients, visitors and hospital employees.

Responsibilities
  • Must possess excellent multi-tasking abilities
  • Must be capable of prioritizing tasks and setting priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent verbal, writing and computer skills required
  • Must be able to prepare verbal and written reports
  • Must complete and pass use of force training within 30 days of hire
  • Must be able to pass handcuffing and chemical agent training
  • Must complete and pass Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED training within 90 days of hire
  • Must be able to wear respiratory protection (N-95 respirator, full face respirator and PAPR), be fit tested and pass respirator physical
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (minimum criteria per Children’s Minnesota Fleet Safety Management policy)
  • Must pass background checks of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and Department of Human Services (DHS)
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Business, Psychology or Sociology preferred
Experience
  • Prior experience in a security or public safety field preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Prior experience responding and intervening in emergency situations such as crisis de-escalation, detainment of suspects, reporting and investigating incidents, and enforcing organizational policy preferred
  • Emergency Operations Center experience preferred
  • Healthcare knowledge/experience preferred
License/Certification Preferences
  • POST skills completed, International Association of Hospital Safety and Security (Basic), First Responder, EMT, or OSHA first responder certifications preferred
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI), Physical Security Professional (PSP), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) a plus
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to supervise staff, including assigning work and providing training and discipline
  • Ability to provide positive direction and motivate performance
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact across cultures
  • Strong customer service and results orientation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of security operations and procedures preferred
  • Ability to use computer programs for dispatching, report writing, information lookup, email, access control and video monitoring
  • Ability to operate two-way radios, telephone, copier, fax and paging systems
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
