Title: Line Officer/Public Safety

VP Area: VP - CFO

Department: Public Safety

Position Compensation: $21.41 - $23.78 / hour

Location: University Campus - St. Paul, Minnesota

Position Summary: The Public Safety Line Officer actively safeguards the university community by conducting proactive campus patrols, responding promptly to calls for service—including emergencies and criminal incidents—and enforcing university policies and applicable laws. The officer builds strong community relationships through daily engagement, provides assistance and information to students, employees, and visitors, and prepares thorough, accurate reports to support effective incident documentation and follow‑up.

The approximate schedule for this position is Monday - Thursday, 8:00pm to 6:00am and compensation includes a shift differential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Campus Patrol & Security:
    Conduct routine foot and vehicle patrols of campus grounds and facilities, secure buildings, and enforce prohibitions on unauthorized individuals, weapons, and other restricted items.
  • Incident Investigation:
    Assist with investigating campus-related incidents and illegal acts, coordinate with local authorities as needed, and produce accurate, timely written reports, including incident documentation and patrol logs.
  • Emergency Response:
    Respond to emergencies, fire alarms, and critical incidents; assist with fire control efforts; follow established emergency procedures; and participate in drills and preparedness demonstrations.
  • Parking & Traffic Management:
    Enforce university parking regulations, issue permits and citations, provide directions and general information to visitors, and assist with crowd and traffic control during major events.
  • Community Engagement:
    Support the safety needs of staff, students, and visitors, while building positive relationships through daily interactions and participation in outreach activities.
  • Communication & Coordination:
    Maintain clear, effective communication with public safety team members, student employees, and university personnel using radios and other communication tools.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications
  • Required:
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent
    • Maintain a growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, reflect His character in all interactions, and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, Doctrinal Statement and Declaration of Christian Community
  • Nice to Have:
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Previous safety and/or security experience

    Proficient in using and monitoring computer systems, Microsoft Office and related software, radio communications, surveillance systems, and safety equipment to support effective reporting and communication.
  • Emergency Response:
    Responds to emergency situations in a calm, appropriate manner; able to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens, and other required safety certifications.
  • Flexibility:
    Ability to work a flexible schedule including on‑call hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Driver’s License:
    Valid driver’s license with the ability to pass required driving tests, comply with university MVR standards, and maintain eligibility.
  • Background Check:
    Must pass initial and ongoing background checks as a condition of employment.
